Ask Poopreport: Can Blood Pressure Medicine Affect Turd Quality?

Posted 03.05.2009 by MSG (1155)
I'm taking Metoprolol as a beta blocker to stop heart palpitations, which it does very well. It makes my poop soft, though, really soft, like lots of little plops. It looks like ribbons, a cross between #5 and #6 on the Bristol Stool Scale. I've been on the med a month now, and have not started returning to my normal poo-pickle.

My question: Has anyone else taken this stuff and had similar symptoms?

If so, did you ever return to normal, and how long did it take? If not, what did you do? Are you still on it and still pooping soft, or did you try dietary or other measures?

I called the cardiologist today and told the nurse practitioner my symptoms. She checked with a doctor and called me back. She says it's quite possible for my body to take this long to adjust.

I don't want to doubt her, but I would like to hear from some of you. What has been your experience, or what additional information do you have?

The only drug I`ve had that affected the superb quality of my turds was diamorphine. I was hooked up to one of those self-administering diamorphine pumps for about 5 days.

After 4 days of constipation I was ready to evacuate. I expected a prolonged agonising birthing, but to my surprise what came blasting out was a gruesome form of bright orange axle-grease. It coated the whole bowl, part of the seat and most of my undercarriage.

After copious and quite fruitless wiping I flushed. All the filthy paper went, but none of the horrendous, greasy butt-slime. I shudder to think how the hospital staff cleaned that mess up.

I only know that vicodin make me constipated for days, but when I eat Chips N' Salsa I shit like theres no tomarrow.

I do believe it can take up to 3 months for your body to adjust to new medication. I would wait it out and if it doesn't change after that time or becomes bothersome I would have a sit down with your doc and explain the situation. He may tell you to wait some more or he may decide to switch medications. I also read up on this drug and it says to not stop taking suddenly as you will have withdrawl symptoms and believe me you don't want that.Hopefully you won't have to grin and bear it through these "side effects" forever. Good luck with...that and keep us informed.

Since I wrote the question some changes have, indeed, taken place. Late last week I started having more solid movements at least some of the time. Yesterday for example I had two pretty good b.m.'s (the second one, around lunch-time, required only one wipe--a real rarity), but then some near-diarrhea after supper, which could have been from something I ate. At any rate, it's been 2 months now since I started the medication, and my poops have finally started to firm up. I hope that continues, and I will keep you informed.
In the meantime, others who have had experiences, especially with Metoprolol, are more than welcome to contribute.

I like poo-pickle. I have never had one. But if I did, I would fight to get it back too. Poo-pickles sound like easy pooping to me.

I've only had three drugs that affected my shit in any way.

Whenever I had some tokes of pot back every once in a blue moon back in high school, my next dump after that would always be a forest green color, not unlike the leaves of the maple trees in our the back yard. But then subsequent ones would just be the familiar brown color.

Also, whenever I take over the counter pain killers (especially ibuprofen), or any kind of medication with iron in it I get really constipated. Not sure why, but it makes a nice break from chronic diarrhea due to IBS.

cornleg (162) -- 03.05.2009

Although I havn't taken that drug, I can empathize with you in this doopartment. I have been taking Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth and at first my blue ribbon winning beached whales turned to a red mudslide...Kinda scared me a little but I feel ok...a day later and no more red...it shoud be sanding my colon free of parasites and whatnot...SWISH!

I took Metropolol for a little while and it was hell adjusting to it. I had the runs, stomach aches, and headaches. I felt like hammered shit for about three weeks.

Maybe you'll just have to give it some time? I don't know if three weeks was a normal adjustment period, but I was also on the lowest dosage available. That might have had something to do with it.

I take it too and yes before I started taking pain meds, My poo was ribbony, and soft, and frequent. All the time. It was rare that I had to even push at all. Just sit, and soft flat ribbons. I was worried maybe there was a polyp or a something down there flattening things. But I also take enalapril for the hypertension too, so that may have something to do with it.
Metoprolol 2x, and the enalapril once. AND,Soma 2x, and oxycodone 2-3x depending on the pain.

MSG (1155) -- 03.07.2009

Pnuttycorn, have you returned to normal stools? If so, how long did it take? If not, are you taking anything (or eating anything) to firm up your turds?

I think I have turned the corner. Yesterday I had two movements. The first (after breakfast) was only moderately firm, but it held together as one quite long piece (a foot? the end went down the hole, so hard to tell) and then a shorter one; pretty good. The second, after supper, I really had to push. It felt almost like constipation and was two hard pieces; I hadn't done anything like that since December. If these firmer poops mean that I have actually adjusted to this medication, it has taken just under 60 days.

I do remember constipation when taking Percocet, a strong pain medication, after kidney stone surgery.

Dark Green (not verified) -- 03.07.2009

I'm on a low dose of Metoprolol and I've only been on it for a month. It tore my intestines up as soon as I began taking it.

Right now my movements are pretty soft, but at least I'm not running to the toilet like I was during the first week, although every now and again.......

I hate taking pills.

I am on a few meds for my heart as well. I have not seen any difference in the quality of my poop. But, it is very much known here that I suffer from IBS. So it is really hard to tell. I am under the impression that these meds caused my IBS in the first place.

Any kind of antibiotic will give me the runs.

pnuttycorn (462) -- 03.08.2009

MSG, As soon as I stated hypertension meds, I started the flat ribbony poo. And it stayed that way. Now that I'm on pain meds, I started out SUPER constipated. It sucked. I am terrified of laxatives( I dunno why it just seems like you end up with cramps and dirty pants), so I just dealt with it. Now I am almost regular. It's like they balanced me out.

daphne (4406) -- 03.09.2009

You know what pisses me off? That I didn't think of starting with a quarter of a pill and working my way up when it became apparent that it was going to be hard to adjust to.

I can't address the Metoprolol issue directly, but if you're having trouble with soft poo, might I suggest that you eat a huge wheel of Wisconsin Sharp Cheddar. That should firm things up nicely.
