Ask PoopReport: Dyeing Dog Doo?

Posted 08.02.2007 by doody calls (10)
Dear PoopReport,

Finding my dog's poop in the backyard is an ongoing challenge. I always miss some when I'm picking up. What can I (safely) feed them that will change their poop color to something easier to find?

Thunderbox (775) -- 08.02.2007

Radioactive waste should do the trick.

Miss Simone Scat (570) -- 08.02.2007

How is it you have a hard time finding the dogpoop? Is the poop green? Maybe try blue food coloring in the pet food. Buy a new color dog food...darker or lighter than what you buy now.

When I worked construction years a go, my dog once ate an entire box of lumber markers, which are just giant crayons, all different colors too. She took multi-colored shits for the next couple of days. Hope this helps you. Maybe if you cut your grass.........

doniker (1522) -- 08.02.2007

Pick it up? Why? I never pick up my dog's shit.

GottaGoGirl (2615) -- 08.02.2007

Rhett beat me to it.

Just feed the dog a crayon every other day.

Artful Dodger (307) -- 08.02.2007

Get rid of your grass and put down gravel.

Deja Poo (609) -- 08.02.2007

I used to feed my dog a treat called lolly-pups. The small treats were multi-colored. On one Saint Patrick's Day, I fed him all the green ones in the box. Yes, he made a shamrock colored dump. So, try feeding your dog all one color of dog treats.

I agree with DD there get a bigger dog. After all if you had an elephant for a pet you would have NO WORRIES finding his dumps. I remember when my dad cut the grass MY job was to pick up the dog poo as a kid so I was quite good at it.

Train the dog to either use a small patch of grass/paving, as my aunts' Cocker Spaniel would. or use a litterbox (yes they make them for dogs). Or, you could follow Poochie out there and wait.

Great comment!

I remember an Akita whose owner never picked up after it in Fort Knox. The dog ate an orange crayon once, one of the big ones, like the ones you give a kindergartener. His poop was marked with bright orange for over a week, and the owner couldn't deny he was leaving it around.

Since I sell soy candles, I know that the crayons work because they were from paraffin wax, which is not digested. Soy crayons are neat, and they are creamy and are fun to color with. They are also digestible. So, if you're going to feed your dog crayons (I do object), feed it paraffin crayons. I can't believe I just said that.

Or you could just do the obviously easier thing and watch your dog poop. Oh wait, I'm assuming your dog is an indoor dog. Is it? If so, sit with your dog while it's outside and then clean up after it. If not, my other question is how tall is your grass? I find that it's harder to find dog shit if the grass is taller. Mow it lower?

I feed my dogs Nutro, and their poop is lighter than other dog's poop, I can say for sure. Maybe you could try switchihg its food. Well, whatever. Good luck and remember, for every poop pile you pick up, there's less flies and bugs around. They lay their eggs on the poop often to digest it, as being nature's garbage men. Leave less mess and you'll have less pests.

Have you tried giving the dog Pitch Black Mountain Dew? As I recall, that can make some very interesting poop colours...

Too much sugar is awful for dogs, though. They can become diabetic too.
