Ask PoopReport: Why Do Women Wash Their Hands More Than Men?

Posted 09.30.2005 by Logjam (2406)
In a recent B.M. Newswire report, Dave mentioned briefly the results of a study on hand washing habits in the US (thanks to Bilgepump for calling our attention to this). The news summary of the report is worth a read.

Given our advanced training in restroom observational technique, few PoopReporters will find the results very surprising. Not everyone washes his or her hands after using the public restroom, but men do so less often than women (75% vs. 90%). Men attending sporting events were the least likely to wash up -- for instance, 37% of the guys attending a game at Atlanta's Turner Field walked right past the sinks. I mean, ya got to get back to the action and to your hotdog, right?

The survey results suggest that males are less hygienic than females. And this is probably so. But I do wonder whether a difference between restroom facilities could explain part of the difference in hand-washing rate -- namely that men can accomplish but one task at urinals, while women are on the pot where they can multitask. If I were a woman who just stood in a long line to get into a stall, I'd use the time to best advantage and squeeze out whatever I could. (I can assume that the women of PoopReport will speak up on this issue.)

To complete the argument, I need to make a confession. Although I always wash my hands after dropping anchor, I often skip it after draining the hose. In my mind, there's a big difference between the two. And even if the same percentage of men as women made this distinction between the need to wash after shitting versus pissing, more women would be washing their hands in public restrooms because they would have done whatever shitting they could while on the pot.

It's also possible that women feel more of a need to wash after peeing because they are probably more likely to end up with piss on their hands.

OK. I think I've said enough to get myself in some deep doo-doo. Time to go wash up. Your thoughts?

caca doodle doo (not verified) -- 09.30.2005

No, I do not sit down and attempt to "squeeze out whatever I can." And no, I don't piss on my hand!

AssBlaster2000 (1117) -- 09.30.2005

I also don't sit down and squeeze out whatever I can, because when it's ready to come out, I don't have to squeeze. Also, our hands get into more intimate contact when we pee, but, if enough TP is used, sometimes it really isn't bad. When I'm at home and that happens, I don't wash my hands but I do squirt them with Purell for good measure. I always wash my hands in a public restroom, though, even if they don't seem dirty. I don't want to be known as someone who doesn't wash their hands.

Tydirium (516) -- 09.30.2005

I only wash my hands after peeing if someone is around to see me. I keep my wang pretty clean -- there's no reason to wash because there's nothing dirty going on down there.

I submit this: washing your hands after peeing has nothing to do with scientific hygiene, and everything to do with irrational social fears of pee and poop. My wang is probably the cleanest part of my body because it only sees the light of day perhaps 60 seconds at a time -- my face and my hands, on the other hand, are exposed to all sorts of bacteria and germs floating around. We should wash our faces every time we go to the bathroom!

Bilgepump (1629) -- 09.30.2005

Tyd, I usually do wash my face after pooping, as it usually requires me to pull my head out of my ass in order to complete my mission.

Skid Marky Mark (1) -- 09.30.2005

Yo, check it out foos. Ain't no big difference between snappin' a growler and siphoning the python. Your hang-low be all dangling down near the vicinity of the brown-eye and gots the same germs on it as your chute do. (Actually, the Markster's be dangling down near his knees, but you know what I means.)

So do like the Markster do when he busts a slash or squeezes a coily: Wash your hands my peeps and wash them good.

Stay off the pipe, and don't forget to wipe. Markster out!

The Big Wiper (2244) -- 09.30.2005

I have to confess I don't always wash after peeing. Might I also suggest (without trying to sound sexist) that perhaps little girls take grooming in general more seriously than boys do from the get-go. Could there be some truth after all in that old nursery rhyme--"boys are made of snips and snails and puppy dog tails; girls are made of sugar and spice and everything nice?"

Of course, that kind of shallow thinking has probably led to the generalization that girls/women don't poop, either.

Lame comment! -1 point

I don't think women poop. That's why they are so full of shi.......... just kidding.

Honestly, it's just a matter of having to sit on a nasty toilet. If a guy is just feeding the Gatorade funnel, he has not touched any thing but his own tallywhacker. I should hope that he knows where it's been. As for flushing, I use my foot. I know that sounds dangerous, but I have good balance. It does draw some funny looks though.

PooperGal (527) -- 09.30.2005

Marky said it best.

Soap and water, people. And rub and rinse throughly.
Germs are bad enough, but shaking hands with someones whose fingers smell like piss is waaaay gross.

Coach Crap (not verified) -- 09.30.2005

Be careful if you shake hands with baseball players some are known to pee on their hands in to toughen the skin on their hands.

Pill Pooper (451) -- 09.30.2005

I totally agree that it depends on the facilities. Generally, if I'm in any public place and I have to piss, I always wash my hands. But, if I'm at a larger venue, like a sporting event, it's tougher to wash your hands. Sometimes there's no paper towels to dry or the air dryer thing doesn't work. If I'm home and I drop a duece I always wash my hands. Then again, I might have a case of OCD, I wash my hands like 50 times a day anyway...

DungDaddy (1369) -- 09.30.2005

I often skip washing my hands in public bathrooms because the sinks look shittier than the toilets. If hundreds of butt-pickers have been handling the faucet knobs, it won't do alot of good to follow them if you want clean.

Fart Poopie (1254) -- 09.30.2005

I don't try to squeeze everything out at once. There's no use in trying to poop if it's not ready to come out. I do wash my hands everytime I use the bathroom.

Men, it doesn't matter if you think your penis is clean. Unless you wash it after every single time you use the restroom, it is not clean. First of all, you all get sweaty testicles. Don't deny it. I've never met a man who didn't have that problem. There's also no way you get every single drop of urine into the toilet/urinal. You are always going to end up with at least one drop of urine in your shorts. Now, given those two conditions, add the fact that your penis is bundled up in there and rubbing against the same underwear that you got pee and sweat in. Your penis is not clean.
Would you let a man, who didn't wash his hands after handling his member, shake hands with your wife, handle your food, handing back assignments to your kids in school, getting his pee and sweaty ball germs all over you and your family?
If you wouldn't, please offer the same courtesy to others.
Like Skid Marky Mark says:
"Wash your hands my peeps and wash them good."

*This has been a Fart Poopie public service announcement.*

Fart Poopie (1254) -- 09.30.2005

P.S. I wrote that last remark rather quickly. By "offer the same courtesy to others," I meant offer the same courtesy to others that you want them to show you.

Shawn St James (not verified) -- 09.30.2005

There is no comparison.

Women have to touch their wads using TP cleaning up. And they shit a lot.

Men dont even have to grab the weenie to download. Not really important to clean up.

PooperGal (527) -- 09.30.2005

After reading this site, it sounds like men poop way more, and far more impressively. They have bigger capacity. Women may poop more frequently because they tend to eat more fiber and veggies. But guys are the kings of the coil.

Urine comes out sterile. But, it is quickly beset by bacteria that dine on its proteins and create the familiar urine odor. The more bacteria, the stinkier the piss.

PooperGal

Coach Crap (not verified) -- 09.30.2005

Another aspect to think of.If you go to a public restroom you might get the 21st century version of lions tigers and bears. That would be muggers, killers, and sexual deviants. Some people come and go and get the hell out.Later for the sink.

Fecal Female (not verified) -- 09.30.2005

I always rinse my hands after I pee, though I must say there's always a wad of toilet paper between my hand and my nether regions, so it's probably not necessary. I absolutely use soap and water after a poop. I have no concerns about public restrooms, I usually don't bother with the paper seat liner unless I see a reason to use it (and in that case, I'll usually go to a different stall anyway) and I never get sick. I can't even remember the last time I had a cold. I suppose that's beside the point but I guess I'm not super anal about cleanliness and I've never suffered for it. It does bother me to see someone exit their stall and leave without at least rinsing their hands. EW!

Citizen R. Kane (not verified) -- 09.30.2005

I gotta second DungDaddy on this one. Public facilities run the gamut from clean to biohazard. In the latter case, if all I'm doing is walking in, wippin' Willy out, and flushing the urinal with my elbow, I'm only taking the germs out that I brought in with me.

Sir Plomps-A-Lot (not verified) -- 09.30.2005

The reason why women wash more than men is because we men do not give a shit what are on our hands after we shit and piss. Plus, after shitting, I use plenty of toilet paper so the shit doesn't touch my hand. Also, our dicks do not contain than many germs and they also go away after a few hours.

runninggrrl (not verified) -- 09.30.2005

I wash my hands every time in public washrooms just because you never know who's been touching what after taking a crap. At home, I don't wash my hands after a pee because a)I use lots of TP and b)urine is sterile but I rarely if ever get any on my hands. If I DO get some on my hands, then I wash it off. All the diseases associated with "not washing your hands after using the restroom" imply that they are transferred through fecal material anyways, so that's the only time it's really mandatory to wash up (with soap and water)

alex (not verified) -- 09.30.2005

i've heard that pee is sterile when it comes out also if u get crap on ur hand when u wipe theres somthin wrong also its ur body (wang thing here) u got ur germs touching the lever to make the water come out is way worse n e ways so its up to u

It's beautiful to see sooo many Shameless Shitters (and pee-ers) who care !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have to agree with Fart Poopie.
In the first place guys, before making it to the head, you had to grab a door handle before you went in to the Admiration Station!
Next, think about all those other places your digits were before you grabbed hold of your pride and joy to give that piece of porceline a proper hosing down.
So maybe, if you're not in a rush for relief,
you ought to wash your hands first to avoid transference.
Yet, self-egos aside... washing your hands after powerwashing the urinal would be appropriate, if for no other reason than self gradification of a job well done (applause),
post play if you will, from having had such a great time with yourself....how about, perhaps just out of consideration for the girl your about to go back and hold hands with; if you're going back to hold hands with a guy...
what can I say?
Urine and sterility? If you really believe that poop, then perhaps you'd like to drink mine?
Here's to you! Chug-A-Lug!

It's not getting piss on your hands that should matter you are touching your mr. willy wonka and as much as you might think it's gold it's still a nasty germ infested thing just as much as a pink panther.

daphne (3514) -- 10.01.2005

I don't understand not washing your hands after handling your dick because it's in close proximity of your butt all day. It's "just around the corner". I think that's odd. But, then again, I'm not a guy and I don't have that equipment.

I always wash my hands because I cook ALOT. Maybe this is why women wash their hands more. Also, I've read tons about women being trained since toddlerhood to be more dainty. We've all heard the about the experiments with little girls who like trucks who are discouraged against playing with them. They stop playing with them. I think that since we're trained to be home makers in many societies and in other ways (how many times does a woman visit home and is expected to make a plate for dad and brother, but never does anyone make a plate for the visiting daughter) that we, too, are expected to think of these things more.

That's my take on it.

Incidentally, I hardly, if ever get shit or pee on my hands when I wipe. Maybe it is the idea of what's "down there". But, a guy actually touches his dick (unless you are one of the ones who can do the freestyle thang) when he pees. I see this as hypocritical and maybe always will......hugging bunnies since 1969

Poopaloopas (28) -- 10.01.2005

Seriously, what is the difference between the skin on the base of my penis and the skin on say, my neck? I wash my penis far more thoroughly then my neck, but nobody would expect to me to wash up after scratching the latter.
As for my member's proximity to my butt, I can say with all certainty that my dick has never touched my ass. There is a ball wall in the way, anyways. The only part of my body besides my ass that gets excessively dirty and gross is my grundle. My penis lives far above that whole area, on top of his testacle throne.
Therefor, my dick is clean. When I piss, I grab it by the base, and when I'm done, I shove it back in. There's no reason to thoroughly wash up after that. The only time I wash my hands after a pee is a) somebody is watching me (then I only rinse) or b) I got splash-back on my hands (then I use soap).
The whole idea that a penis is covered in germs is a huge lie. Some kind of ingrained thought of cooties from grammar school, that's my guess.

Fart Poopie (1254) -- 10.01.2005

If your armpits are sweaty, would you say they are clean? Would you not be disgusted if some guy touched his armpits and then you?
The same principle applies to your penis. The only difference is that pee doesn't come out your armpits.

The Shit Volcano (3737) -- 10.02.2005

I'm staying out of this argument. I wash my hands after I use the toilet. I also wash up to my elbows, wash my face, and use handy wipes on anything that has touched a public restroom toilet. I would do this if I was a man as well.

OCD germophobia sucks monkey balls!

house o' poop (not verified) -- 10.02.2005

Another take on hand-washing-- I'm learning lately through bitter experience that even when we do wash we're probably not doing a good enough job. (s'posed ta scrub for the length of "Happy Birthday I think." poonurse?) I've got 3 little kids, so I change a lot of diapers, and I wash my hands a lot! Well, even with what I thought was good handwashing, everytime they get a barfing virus I end up getting it too, no matter how much I wash. NOW I've heard those viruses are not airborne, but fecal-oral route transmitted. Happy thought! So now I'm a Purell junkie, and my odds seem to be improving.
And on the "my penis is clean" thread, those tighty whities are still a nice, warm, moist bacterial paradise. E. coli Caribbean!

The Amazing Anus (3) -- 10.02.2005

When I poop/piss I usually don't have time to wash my hands, what with my hotdog cart just standing out in the open, waiting for theft. But I do keep some germ-ex in my pocket and wash up with that. (I'm sure little billy won't like his hotdog both smelling AND tasting like shit)

Terd Ferguson (25) -- 10.02.2005

It's not about whether you get piss or crap on your hands so much as what those OTHER dirty people leave on surfaces in the public loo...like on the handle of the privy door you just touched on your way to the sink, and the faucets, and the towel roller, and the handle of the door on the way out...argh.

daphne (3514) -- 10.03.2005

You know, Terd, you brought up the one irrefutable point I've read in this comment thread. You can argue what you have on your body but not what others have on thiers and if they wash their hands.

To me, that's reason enough.

And, I wonder, can anyone here get ahold of about 20 petri dishes full of agar? I've got an experiment in my head brewing.

the j-man (not verified) -- 10.03.2005

I usually don't wash my hands after I urinate because I don't really touch my member during the process. My technique goes something like this:
1) Unbutton and unzip pants.
2) Stand with feet roughly shoulder width apart, so my pants don't fall down.
3) Pull the front of my underwear down.
4) Piss 'til I'm empty.
5) Shake hips side to side to get rid of the last drips.
6) Release underwear and refasten pants.
7) Flush toilette/urinal with foot /elbow.

Tada! Didn't even have to touch my groin.
Typically, unless you have an erection, your gentials are aiming down for you already.

That ladies and gentlemen is why I , and the other some 37% of males don't wash their hands after peeing.

Bunga Din (1239) -- 10.03.2005

Always wash, it's the person before you you have to worry about, and most likely not for poo, pee issues but influenza and other airborne viruses. I always turn the tap on/off with a paper towel/ tp and flush with foot.

In The Bushes (111) -- 10.03.2005

I am actually sort of confused as to why you wouldn't wash your hands. Are you afraid of soap? Do you honestly not think think you have 5 seconds? Is it some sort of power trip, so that you can say, "Ha ha, I didn't wash my hands?" I wash my hands every time I go to the restroom, even though I never get pee or poop on them. I use TP for that. I kind of enjoy washing my hands. They're probably dirty anyway just from working and stuff, and I eat frequently, so why not? Besides, it's a sort of meditative activity, albeit a short one. For a few seconds you get to experience a different state, if you focus on the task at hand.

The Shit Volcano (3737) -- 10.03.2005

Ohm!

Terd Ferguson (25) -- 10.03.2005

It is well worth the few minutes it takes to wash up, each time you go. I find that I almost never get a cold since I've upped the handwashing frequency. I shit you not - it works.

The Shit Volcano (3737) -- 10.21.2005

I agree, Terd. Washing up is one of the reasons so many flus, colds, and other sickness that have swept through my family have never touched me. Everyone has always wondered why I am the only one in my house who hasn't gotten sick when everyone else is bedridden. This is why.

My grandmother lived in a house with a tuberculosis patient when she was a child and never caught it. This was because she was just as germophobic as me and refused to go a couple of hours without washing. It may have saved her life.

Anonymous Coward (not verified) -- 02.14.2006

I am 13 and I hardly ever wash my hands. They are just going to get dirty again. The only time I wash my hands are when someone is looking or I get a splash back.

Anonymous Coward (not verified) -- 03.19.2006

If you shower everyday, I believe it is counter productive to wash your hands after peeing in a public restroom especially if you handled objects like flush levers etc. using paper towels. I mean the taps and soap dispensers are a 100 times dirtier than a recently washed penis can ever be, so why the hypocrisy? Using a public tap will give you diseases that you penis can't.

Bunghole In the... (432) -- 03.19.2006

Anatomically speaking, women would probably tend to risk urine on their hands when wiping. If the idea of turning on the faucet in a public facility seems to be a foray into the germ jungle, buy some antibacterial hand wips or gel.

I don't like to make the assumption that females cook more than males, but I would imagine that is probably the case. When food preparation is in the mix, it is accompanied by frequent handwashings. I think it is a learned habit thing.

Anonymous Coward (not verified) -- 05.19.2006

Women are not pooping in public stalls - no self respecting woman would ever sit on a public toilet unless it was an emergency, and then only after covering it with tp or a paper cover. That's not why we're washing our hands. To get in the stall we had to touch the door, when inside we had to touch the lock, we probably had to touch the wall while we balanced above the toilet. Germs everywhere. Not washing our hands upon exiting is just too gross to contemplate. Men get to stand, unzip, pee & rezip, without touching anything but themselves, which I assume they think is clean. That would be the difference.

The Shit Volcano (3737) -- 05.19.2006

Another point that I don't think was mentioned here is that women change pads and tampons sometimes. It is not always a clean job, no matter how tidy we are and how clean we keep our twats and tacos. Pussies throw up, especially when you have been sitting for a long time and then suddenly stand up. Would you like us to go around getting our periody hands all over everything?

GottaGoGirl (2615) -- 05.20.2006

Excellent point! I think as women, we just get into the habit of washing our hands automatically after using the facilities.

Gentlemen, here's a point to ponder. You may THINK your Manhood is clean when you set out for the john, but if you touched a door handle getting into the building (i.e. restaurant), then touched the handle to the bathroom door, you've got dirty hands, now.

And then you do your thing in the toilet, zip up, and touch the same door getting out of the bathroom. Now you're going to EAT with those hands, AND your manhood is NOT as clean as you thought.

SO! Not only is it a good idea to wash AFTER you pee, but before, as well, so you don't get your dickie dirty.

Double Flush (598) -- 05.20.2006

I wash my hands and then use the paper towel I dried with to open the door. Doors that swing outwards are really nice so you can kick them open with your already nasty shoe and not have to touch the door with your clean hands.

Male or female, it pays to develop a regular handwashing regime. As TSV points out, above, this is not only because of elimination-related germs, but also because of other types of bacteria and viruses you pick up simply by being out and about. Thus, I not only wash my hands after every use of the facilities, but also after every time I come inside from outdoors (home or work).

Since I started that, years ago, I haven't had many bad colds, and I've never had the flu!

I would strongly suggest that everyone should wash his/her hands before leaving the restroom. There are germs in the air, on the bathroom surfaces, on the door that you touched to enter the bathroom, etc. Heck, you do know that you are breathing in aerosolized shit when you smell poop in the restroom, right? You do not want to know how many nasty viruses can be transmitted fecal/orally. Please for the love of god people, just wash your hands whenever the opportunity presents itself. You'll thank yourself later when you don't get rotavirus or whatnot.

To the dude that said he keeps his dick clean and unexposed, you do realize that when you hold your dick to pee the germs on your hands get onto your dick? Nothing is sacred for germs. Trust me.

This is some fun reading! I am male and always wash my hands before leaving the bathroom, at work and at home. In public, almost always, I can't remember but there were probably a few really bad places where it was not practical. I like the feeling of having clean hands. I find that at work my hands get sweaty and oily from using the computer mouse all day. Also driving in hot weather (in California). I rarely have problems with getting pee or poop on myself. I can't say if I am any healthier because of hand washing. Those who do not wash each time are being lazy and showing disrespect for everyone in their lives and others in general. If a guy stuck his hand down this pants and then offered to shake your hand, would you like that? In any case, I believe that washing hands as often as possible (in a reasonable manner) is best practice and good habit. My wife and I both wash often and we feel that it has helped our daughter avoid excessive illness.

I am a 20-year veteran of a high school faculty and spend 45 minutes of 5th hour (lunch period) each day "supervising" the most used bathroom on campus which is just down the hall from the cafeteria. Among my responsibilities are to cut down on the smokers, vandals and other misusers of the bathroom which has 18 stalls and 10 sinks. My observations are that just fewer than half the girls wash their hands. Sometimes its because the sinks are in use, sometimes it's because the two-minute warning bell rings and they have to quickly get upstairs or to the other side of the building, sometimes the soap dispenser is out or has been broken, and on a couple of occasions, the sinks have flooded. The paper towel dispensers jam because the girls pull on them too hard and out of frustration, sometimes hit them. One of the most common infractions I have to deal with is to ask the girl to pick up her used towel from the sink or the proximity of the trashcan and to slow down and place it inside. It's the speed that drives all decisions that I observe. Despite my presence, there's always two or three stalls that need cleaning--i.e. urine on the seat or clogged, etc.--and while many will avoid it, some girl comes in, sits down and it's business as usual. My husband and I have discussed it, and he is also taken aback by those who would obviously sit in someone else's urine. While we don't have children of our own, it is my belief that too few parents are taking the time to explain public bathroom use/decisions/procedures with their students. My mom spent time with me going over these just before I started school and then reinforced them with me when we traveled. She even watched and critiqued my hand-washing while we were alone (she never wanted to criticize me in front of my friends--thanks Mom!) More of this needs to be done at this time of the year as students start getting ready for returning to school.

I confess I didn't always wash hands after peeing, but my young son was very quick to point this out to me! Not wanting him to think me dirty, I got into the habit!!! But reading all these posts makes me pleased I do - particularly the very sensible comments of Fart Poopie.

I've said before on this site though that I try to avoid touching toilet doors after washing - using a paper towel if possible. Too many men don't wash after either a pee or a shit.

Vanessa (not verified) -- 08.18.2007

High school girls, as Mardelle reports, sitting in another girl's pee left on a school toilet seat is GROSS! It's probably something that girl has been doing for years and she just doesn't seem to stop and think about the hygiene issue. I agree that parents are not doing an effective job of preparing young children for such instances, so obviously they are not going to know anything different when they enter high school. My daughter is 8, going on 9, and I still take her into public bathrooms and when I see a dirty (clogged, pee on seat, no toilet paper available) toilet, I urge her to try another. Sometimes she's resentful when she has to go real bad and has to wait in line for a cleaner stall, but patience and setting higher cleanliness standards for herself will serve her well in the future.

Mother of Tweens (not verified) -- 08.19.2007

After reading Mardelle's posting and sorting through clothing and schools supplies for my two middle school daughters, I decided to bring up the subject of the school bathrooms because, quite frankly, we have never discussed it. They start the sixth and seventh grades, respectively, this week. This is what I learned:
1) they remember to wash their hands most of the time but sometimes the lines at the sinks are just too long and they just have to make a run for class because a two and a half hour detention is assigned for every three tardies. (I remember that my oldest got one last year when she left her bookbag in the bathroom and she arrived in history class without it!)
2) Some seats are wet because some girls hover pee and don't lift the seat. Most of the time they will wipe it off before sitting down but my youngest said one stall had no toilet paper and she had to pee real bad so she sat down anyway.
3) Each of the restrooms has at least one open stall. Sometimes the door is taken off for a few days because of vandalism. One door had a gang sign carved into it. Although my two haven't, in emergencies they say some girls will use them. Sometimes a friend will stand in the doorway to talk to them/shield the user.
4) In some of the most heavily used bathrooms on main floor, toilet paper is usually out sometime during the lunch hour. Some of the girls are carrying packages of Kleenex with them. (Which my girls have always been encouraged to do).
5) Their biggest complaint is the large amount of foul language they hear in the bathrooms and how rude and abusive a few of the girls are towards one another. My oldest let a 5th grader go ahead of her in line because she was crying and ready to poop her pants. Another girl called my daughter a **** and a ***** because she gave the girl cuts. Then the girl physically blocked my daughter out of the way when the stall reopened because she didn't want to wait any longer.
6) My girls have gotten use to peeing and pooping in toilets that are clogged with carelessly disposed of hygiene products, soda cans and even an occasional textbook or notebook.
Now I understand why they want to swing by the house first before we do errands or go to the mall after school. I would encourage more parents to have such a talk with their children. I'm glad I did.

Tyrus (not verified) -- 08.19.2007

I've noticed that not too many guys are commenting on this thread. I shit at school four or five times a week, usually no more than once a day. I pee twice a day. When there's time, I will usually wash my hands, but often the liquid soap has been spilled or vandalized and the faucets leak and sometimes there's no hot water. Also, there's teachers and administrators that come in and yell for us to keep things moving. Last year they made teachers crack down on tardies to class. Most of the time I can't sit down and shit or even pee in five minutes. It sucks having to wait for a stall. Some dude comes out and he's peed over the seat. He should be using the urinal but he probably wants more privacy. As for me, I want a cleaner seat. Once last year the seat was really dripping so I wiped it off. That was the end of the toilet paper man, so I didn't have none left to wipe with after my shit. I ended up leaving the stall and there were no others open. I had to go down to the end and use a doorless stall, and sit down and wipe myself. Then the bell rang, and I knew the detention would suck so I left without flushing or washing my hands. I must have wiped too fast because that night I had some pretty big skidmarks in my underwear. My girlfriend bitches about the bathrooms too because many of the girls don't flush and it grosses her out to have to sit over what they've left. If she flushes and then waits for the bowl to fill it just takes more time and she and I like to spend time together. But not in the cafeteria for detentions.

Lame comment! -1 point
turd turdgutson (112) -- 08.19.2007

For what it's worth, I, for one, don't usually wash my hands after performing ANY bathroom activities, unless I actually manage to get urine or feces on them (via the toilet paper ripping and causing me to drag my fingers across my shit-covered ass, for example). If I can't see anything on my fingers after this happens, I usually perform a finger-sniff to find out if I need to wash or not.

I didn't read all of the comments, but here is my two cents and I hope I don't repeat to many of the other comments here.

I got to this page after a "discussion" with my SO. She is handwasher, I am not (I am male). However, I believe (in keeping with a few of the comments I did read) that she, like many people is an irrational handwasher.

Should you wash your hands in a public restroom. Absolutely -- but not because of what you "did" to yourself, but because of what everyone else has left behind (as it were)!

You might be pretty sure you don't have cholera, but what about that ugly slob that was there before you? OK, you should wash your hands, but how should you do it?

Turn the water on and let it run for a second. Rinse your hands. Lather up. Wash your hands (and wrists and lower arms, actually) for about 30 (!) seconds. Anything less won't actually remove that many germs. Now comes the part most people miss.

Leave the water running (unless it turns off automatically, you lucky dog) and get your paper towels. Dry your hands on the towels. Turn off the faucet WITH THE PAPER TOWELS. If you use your "clean" hands to turn off the faucet, you just get the same germs right back on your hands! The faucet handles are probably almost as "germy" as the toilets!

And of course you have to get the paper towels into the trash without touching the trashcan too. Good luck with that.

If the point of washing your hands in a public restroom is to "get rid of the germs" and is just not some superstitious ritual because "poop is gross" you should probably carry a bottle of hand disinfectant with you at all times. Wash your hands to get most of the stuff off, and then after you have left the lavatory hit your hands with sanitizer to get off the germs you picked up from the faucet handles, trash can, door handle and so on.

Cold and flu viruses spread through aerosole droplets and gather on surfaces, you pick them up with your hands. The doorknob in a restroom can be as dangerous as the toilet. Flu kills more people than cholera.

So, wash your hands, but don't be superstitious about it!

Anonymous Coward (not verified) -- 11.07.2007

Usually what I do is I use the bathroom and then I wash my hands. I leave the daucet running and I get a paper towel and dry my hands. Afterwards, I use the paper towel to turn of the water and open the door. Then I toss the paper towel toward the trash (although I usually miss.)

Anonymous Coward (not verified) -- 12.07.2007

I agree with the comment that said you wash your hands to prevent collecting germs that are already present in the facility that you use. And describes the hand washing technique, with one addition I'd like to add, roll out your hand drying towel before you start to wash, Turn the water on and let it run for a few seconds. "Rinse your hands. Lather up. Wash your hands (and wrists and lower arms, actually) for about 30 (!) seconds. Leave the water running (unless it turns off automatically, you lucky dog) and get your paper towels. Dry your hands on the towels. Turn off the faucet WITH THE PAPER TOWELS"
One more addition use the towels to open the door if needed.

And gentlemen, your wang is cleaner to start with then if you touch it in the procedure, wash before as well....

daphne (3514) -- 12.07.2007

Where did you hear that your wang is cleaner than your hand? I could believe the germs are different, but does it really have less of them? If you've got any type of data on that or links, please share them with us. Those types of studies always surprise me.

Wash 'em, dammit! (not verified) -- 12.29.2007

men, for the love of your woman or your potential SO, wash your hands. i can't tell you the number of conversations i've had with girlfriends about how a guy not washing his hands and then coming and touching us is like a guy whiping out his penis and rubbing it all over us. no girl finds that attractive. so for your love of your SO or wannabe SO, wash your hands. she (or he) doesn't like the idea of your dick being rubbed over her back as you give her that nice massage.

and obviously, i was my hands after any bathroom visit. if you can't take the 30 secs it takes to wash your hands, i look down on you.

Connie (not verified) -- 12.29.2007

I'm 26 and have to admit that I haven't always been as diligent as is should in washing my hands after using pubic restrooms. Part of it was growing up in a rural area, going to small schools, a small private liberal arts college and now working as a CPA in one of the most prestigous buildings in the region. However, just observing my 5-year-old niece as her babysitter for two days last weekend convinced me of the importance of vigorous handwashing on the part of everyone: she ran ahead of me to the stall, dropped the seat with her right hand and peed only after putting both of her hands over the front of the stool for support. She couldn't reach the toilet tissues on her side while she was seated so she gets up, tears some off, then sits down momentarily over the side of the stool to wipe. She stands to pull up her underwear and jeans, then sits back down on the stool to try and flush it. Doesn't work. She can't get enough pressure on the flusher from her seat. Still on the stool, she turns around about 90 degrees and puts both hands on the flusher, and by throwing her weight on it, is able to get it to work. Then she uses both hands on the front to lift the seat back up again. It doesn't get back all the way and falls. She picks it back up and this time has her hands underneath it as she pushs it back into place. Then she unlatches the door and opens it to come out. I noticed that she had urine--perhaps from bad wiping--on her thumb and index finger. Of course, I required her to wash her hands and supervised it. And I'm no longer skeptical of the importance for both her and the dozens of others that would use that stall later.

daphne (3514) -- 12.29.2007

That has to be one of the biggest misconceptions about hand washing - that in a "clean place", it's not that necessary. Connie, you should read about toothbrush studies. When a toilet is flushed, micro particles from the toilet are whooshed into the air and land everywhere. Anything from E coli to coliform has been found as far as 6 feet from the flushed toilet, and this ends up on your hands by landing on every surface around.

It's great that you had this experience with your niece. You sound like you'll be a good mom someday if it's in the cards for you.

Anonymous Coward -- 12.29.2007

It's commendable that Connie requires her niece to wash her hands. However, I would not let one of my daughters (and I have 3) at that age select a toilet without me first checking it out. I would want the seat to be clean and I would cover it before they sat down. The toilet paper would shield their hands from raking themselves over the seat. Second, she would be taught to sit still while on the stool and how to more carefully and effectively wipe. Third, she would use her foot to flush, or I would flush it for her. Fourth, no child should lift or drop a public toilet seat without toilet paper in their hand. All three of my daughters, although now teens, were well-taught at a young age and understand the importance of that discipline to their continued good health.

Realistic Mother (not verified) -- 12.30.2007

While I basically agree with everything in the postings by Mother of Tweens and Connie, my experiences with my children--two boys, two girls--is that we need to be realistic and pick our "fights" carefully. For example, last week my 15-year-old daughter and I were shopping at Wal-Mart. Upon entering the two stall bathroom, I entered the right stall and noticed all the toilet seat protectors were out of the dispenser. I asked my daughter to pass me one from hers and she did, but she said she hasn't used one for years since she was old enough to put them down herself. Her seat had been up and I could hear her drop it and as we sat I told her she should probably be more careful in public bathrooms. I suggested she put toilet paper over her hand to flush and I got one of those "Oh, Mom...nobody's doing that..."responses. I reminded her to wash her hands and she did. That was extremely important, I felt, since our next stop would be the food court of a nearby mall. I guess I'm going to pick my fights carefully and not worry about the smaller items. She's a good kid and I should be thankful.

daphne (3514) -- 12.30.2007

Nicely said. I think it's more important to have a parent who sees the big issues than the one who scrutinizes all the little ones. My mother is a scrutinizer. We haven't spoken in 3 years and counting. It's sad. Keep on giving that kid a little leeway and she won't resent you in the future.

Mother of Two (not verified) -- 12.30.2007

I'm the mother of two sons--7 & 10. Their father is on the coast and takes very little interest in them. A colleague at a real estate agency got us tickets for a pro football game today, and after reading this thread yesterday, I asked my boys to comment on it when they came out of the stadium bathroom after using it for the second time today. I was particularly surprised to find that Mardelle, Vanessa and Mother of Tweens had witnessed poor bathroom habits that, in addition to no handwashing, also included girls of apparently various age levels, sitting on a toilet seat in someone else's pee. I reminded my boys when I walked them down to the bathroom the second time to wash their hands thoroughly and got the usual response from my oldest: "Yeh, like sure Mom!" About five minutes later when they came out, my youngest was fumbling with his belt and admitted that he had taken a crap. I asked him if he had wiped the seat first and he seemed surprised that I would ask. He did say however, that conditions were just like at school, the seats get peed on and the boys really don't think anything about sitting in it. My oldest corroborated the story and said I should just be satisfied that his brother didn't crap his pants. My oldest said he washed his hands but rolled his eyes when I suggested he should have insisted that his brother did so too. From what I've read on this thread, it wouldn't be any easier for the mother of girls!

Dudeman Aric (not verified) -- 01.13.2008

Do you wash your hands every time you touch your telephone? When I pee I dont get pee on myself, it would be like washing my left hand everytime I touch my right hand. It's only skin.

Anonymous Coward (not verified) -- 04.10.2008

I rarely wash my hands after a pee (or poo). Only when there's significant 'spillage'. What's this obsession with willies not being 'clean', and what implications does this have for having sex?

Artful Dodger (345) -- 04.10.2008

I can see why you want to remain anonymous there, Anonymous Coward. I wouldn't want anyone to know that I go around with poopie fingers either. Just because you can't see the germs doesn't mean they're not there, you know. It's not a matter of being a clean freak, it's just basic personal hygiene.

Space Turd (not verified) -- 05.15.2008

Washing after shitting is one thing, especially if you have the time or you just had a Shitstorm of the Century.

But seriously, as a guy, I really dont wash after I drain the lizard. My dick is a) "clean" and b) mine. Im comfortable with myself and the germs on me. If the germs are on my dick, I'll probably get sick anyway.

Not mention, guys, how many times a day (especially on those warmer days) do you adjust yourself or scratch your balls? Your walking around, get an itch or a pinch, quickly look around, and then shove your hand down there and adjust. Cause we all do it sometimes. Do we head to the nearest bathroom after that? Usually, no we dont. We continue on with our day... and then greet Ted, whom we havent seen in months, with a smile and a firm handshake.

Might as well return the favor....

baron von crapalot (505) -- 05.16.2008

space turd, sooooooooo right, if you are stood in a public urinal, how many men do you see leaving the room, passing by the opportunity to wash.

Did I just fart?.... hope so!

Classic Mail User (not verified) -- 05.16.2008

I ALWAYS go in the stalls, so usually I will wash my hands. Especially if I am getting ready to eat! Not washing your hands is how you get sick, and I still have a lingering cough from getting sick, and I wonder what I may have forgot to do?
