The Carter Center has been promoting latrines in Ethiopia as a way to fight disease. The center hoped for 10,000 new latrines last year -- but villagers have
built more than 90,000!
It's the women in the villages who are largely responsible for this enthusiastic reception. Ethiopian men, it turns out, are allowed to drop drawers and shit anywhere, anytime. But women have had to "wait until dark so that no one will see," according to Teshome Gebre, the Carter Center's point man in Ethiopia.
"One woman told us she was a prisoner of the daylight," Gebre said. Another satisfied Ethiopian woman pointed out, "With the latrine, we are equal with the men."
We at PoopReport see this as further evidence of the inspiration of the
Shameless Shitting Manifesto and of the ideals celebrated on
Poop for Peace Day. Please join us on April 15 for a massive dump. Spill out your guts for the cause, or sound your butt trumpet for the rights all people should enjoy: life, liberty, and the pursuit of a satisfying shit anytime, day or night.
