The
NY Post sums it up quite nicely:
Following a Newsweek report that interrogators in Guantanamo Bay flushed pages of the Koran down the toilet to get suspected terrorists to talk, Muslim faithful across the world have been galvanized into protests and riots. Sixteen people are dead in Afghanistan. Newsweek has hurriedly and cowardly (in my opinion) retracted the story, saying that the anonymous source who spilled the beans now no longer stands by his or her story (well, duh -- if I said something that got sixteen people killed, I'd deny it, too!).
Aside from foreign policy ramifications, what's interesting about this story is that it underscores the unviersal symbolic power of poop. Muslim culture couldn't be more different from American culture -- and yet the symbolism of flushing something down the toilet (whether it happened or not) is instantly understood on both sides of the cultural divide.
We're playing with fire here at PoopReport -- poop has the power to cause riots, to ruin international relations, to get people killed. Thank God we use our powers
for good.
