Convicted South Philadelphia cocaine dealer Dawud Bey is on trial again, this time for threatening government witnesses whose testimony helped send him to prison.
"And when I get out, I'm gonna try and kill every fucking rat that I know, Dog!" Bey allegedly shouted to an inmate.
The prosecutors have this threat on tape, as it was delivered through a communications system frequently used in the Federal Detention Center in Philadelphia: a very inexpensive cell phone. Or, to be more precise, a cell-toilet phone.
By lowering the water level in the toilets in their cells,
inmates talk to one another through their toilets. The FBI recorded the statement -- by, we suppose, setting up recording equipment on a bowl whose water level they lowered for the same purpose.
You have to wonder what happens when it comes time to use those toilets for their intended purpose. Are ALL sounds transmitted from cell to cell?by
