Overflowing Toilet Costs Company About $700,000

Four hundred Australian power station workers refused to work for two days after a portable toilet overflowed and spilled shit on the ground. The $700,000 cost of the shutdown near Adelaide came to light during an inquiry into Australia's construction industry. Alstom Power industrial relations executive manager Graham Gardner told the inquiry that management cleaned and repaired the toilet and removed surrounding soiled dirt. Workers, however, believed their health was at risk. The cost included about $170,000 paid to 400 workers for time off and money paid to subcontractors for lost time and equipment costs. Mr. Gardner told the inquiry: "I believe that this was not a legitimate safety concern as it only affected a very small area of the project, and there were other amenities available." The portable toilet was eventually removed from the site, but workers didn't end the stoppage until the company decided to give them more money. Way to go, guys!
