Opposition lawmakers called on Spain's government Wednesday to stop taxing diapers at 16 percent, the same rate as cigarettes and alcohol.

Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar's conservative government used to tax feminine hygiene products at 16 percent, but recently agreed to lower the rate to 7 percent under pressure from the Socialist Party.

Now the Socialists have set their sights on diapers, including those used by adults, proposing they should only be taxed at 4 percent.
