An industrial stink is brewing over the refusal by bosses at Taronga Zoo to pay workers to
pick up animal poo.
The Australian Workers Union is taking the fight to the NSW Industrial Relations Commission to win back a $4.60 a week allowance for zoo maintenance employees for shovelling and disposing of excrement.
Union State secretary Russ Collison accused zoo management of cancelling the special allowance in July as a tactic during heated negotiations for a new enterprise agreement which included a 3 per cent pay increase.
"It was a childish approach to a serious issue," he said. "Now the allowance matter is holding up the introduction of the whole agreement, including the pay rise. The whole thing has got a stench to it."
In September, staff refused to collect the animal droppings from cages and exhibits for a weekend as part of a campaign to have the allowance reinstated. But management has remained steadfast.
