Subway Sandwich Shits

Posted 11.21.2002 by Dakota
High-School football players in Michigan were all smiles after advancing in the state playoffs over the weekend. The smiles, however, turned to grimaces when they developed the shits. More than two dozen students became ill, apparently with food poisoning, after eating Subway sandwiches on the way home from their victory in a nearby town. Apparently, only those students who ate sandwiches with mayonnaise became sick. The students are feeling better now and the coach predicts that they will be ready for the semifinals next weekend. Next time, ask the Subway to hold the mayo!

Show some poop support, or make a poop retort.

Subway is a nasty place! I used to eat there, but now I avoid it like the plague. (Probably because I'm afraid of GETTING the plague!) The last few times I ate there, well over two years ago, I ended up with either food poisoning (thankfully minor) or some kind of flu-like illness. The food is not only stuffed full of chemicals, it is left out in the open where I have watched unwashed workers sneeze and cough on it. Just another place where laziness costs money and health.

I've wondered about all that meat just laying around. There is a fridge system underneath (I've seen it when they change out a bin of pickles or whatever), and the condiments seem to have little lids, but the meat and veggies ARE all out in the open.

How do they keep dust from settling on the food (or worse?) I guess they don't. Ewww.

Double Flush (626) -- 10.19.2006

At the two Subway restaurants near here, they both have excellent sanitation grades and EVERYTHING has a lid. It's much better with everything staying covered.

DungDaddy (1460) -- 11.20.2006

Subway is my favorite! I always wanted to be gay with that Jared guy who lost all the weight (maybe from dissentary!), but who still doesn't look right.

healthy 1 (1431) -- 11.20.2006

LOL TSV. I also avoid most Subways because of filthy conditions.

The only Subway that I will eat at is the one in Framingham. That Subway is spotless.

The Big Wiper (2287) -- 11.20.2006

Well, honest to Jared, folks, I've never had a bad experience at a Subway. Nothing unexpected at the other end. I like the fact that I can control the ingredients, and I've never gotten a bad sandwich. Maybe there are a few Subways here and there that people have run into that weren't up to snuff, but I travel a great deal and have never run into a substandard Subway. (I think there may be some sort of pun in there somewhere.)

Nine Inch Log (564) -- 11.20.2006

I will never eat at a Subway again. I'm biased though. I work at a locally owned sandwich shop (next door to subway ironically), and have been there through most of college. The Subway next to us is going out of business because of us. The employees get paid more and everything from the bread to the tomatoes is all locally grown/made/delivered. Essentially, everything is fresh. We even make our own soups and meatballs.

Number One . . . I order you to take a number two.

GottaGoGirl (2615) -- 11.20.2006

I've told this story somewhere before, but one time I was in a Subway, and asked for avocado to be added to my sammich.

The boy looked at me incredulously and croaked, "You want AVOCADO on your SANDWICH?!? Are you sure?" Yes, yes I did want avocado, thank you.

"Well, Okay..." He pulled all kinds of faces and made all sorts of choking noises while he was cutting the lucious, buttery green goodness. All the while, he shook his head in disbelief.

Screw him. I've never gotten a bad sammich there.

The Big Wiper (2287) -- 11.20.2006

Avocado gets a bad rap nutritionally. It's gotten the reputation of a high-fat food, but it's loaded with healthy mono-unsaturated fats which are heart healthy. And I think it's fantastic in salads and dips.

GottaGoGirl (2615) -- 11.21.2006

I cannot bring myself to eat fish, so my "good fat" has to come from avocado, nuts, etc...

Not that I'm complaining.

Fart Poopie (1258) -- 11.21.2006

DungDaddy, I agree with you. You can tell that Jared has several pounds of skin sagging under his clothes. It makes him look creepy.

I love Subway and have never had a problem with their food.

Bunga Din (1238) -- 11.21.2006

I HATE SUBWAY! Up in Canada we have a chain called Mr. Sub and they have great subs, same fixings as Subway but the meat is NOT sliced to micron thinness. When I get a Sub I expect to taste the meat that's on it, not just the cheap veggies that accompanies it, Subway loads their subs with the cheap veggies and skimps big time on the meat. Mr. Sub is Big on the meat and you can get as much veggies as you want as well. Cleanliness I think boils down to the franchisee and individual employee, just cause you got crap at one is not indicative of crap at all of them.

Great comment! +1 point
The Big Wiper (2287) -- 11.21.2006

Jared was at least a three-hundred fifty pounder before he lost all that weight on Subway subs. So, yes, he probably has some major saggage (yes, I know that's not a word!) to deal with. I'm told you can have extra skin removed and tighten yourself up.

Ummm, that's creepy in itself.

healthy 1 (1431) -- 11.22.2006

Oh, welcome back Dakota. I have enjoyed reading your contributions to the site.

I wonder if Jarred lost all of that weight because of dysentery, from one of the filthy Subway chains?

I don't know about elsewhere, but every Subway around here is very clean. On a 100-point scale, every Subway I have been to posts 97 or above. They never know when to expect an inspection, either--they just show up.

GottaGoGirl (2615) -- 11.22.2006

Plastic surgeons can do a "whole body lift" and cut lots of extra skin off. I've wondered if whoring for Subway is Jared's only job, or if he's employed doing anything else.

You'd think he'd save up enough to get a little nip/tuck.

Bob Saggage. Sob Baggage. Sobway Subs. Subway Sobs. It's all a cryin' shame!

ghostlight (30) -- 11.27.2006

The two Subways I go to are very clean. Everything has lids and the meat, cheese, condiments etc. are stored and handled properly. The employees change gloves for each sub and they don't skimp on the ingredients.(Roast beef on Italian bread is my favorite)I have never gotten sick from Subway, Wendy's however is another story.

AssBlaster2000 (1116) -- 11.28.2006

There was an ad in the local paper recently for jobs at a nearby Subway and after the phone number you were supposed to call it said "ask for Jared." I laughed more than I should have.

We have a Subway inside our building at work and it is always clean and the food is pretty good. I usually eat the chicken sandwiches or meatball subs though so I don't have problems with lack of meat like Bunga does. (Hee hee.) If I want a real sandwich with lunchmeat I will always go to an Italian restaurant or deli. Subway sells subs, not flippin' hoagies. If I have my choice of fast food/sandwich chains, I do prefer Subway though. It's second only to Quizno's. Mmmmmmm . . . toasty.

Every time I eat subway the food is really good, but the next day I have the shits. I have noticed it over the course of a year. I the food is good, but having to shit it out the next day sucks.

Postman (819) -- 06.20.2008

I hate Subway. In my hometown there are a couple of other sub shops. I'll eat at these other places because, simply put, their subs are so much better.

Also because I hate that Jared guy, or whatever his name is.

doniker (1551) -- 06.21.2008

I think it all depends on the location.

I know of several people that got sick from eating at Subway and the food is lame (you don't get much for the high price you pay).

But the Subway store in my town is very good and clean - we go there at least once a month and it was always been good, with no strange after effects.

I still think Subway sucks overall, compared to a real deli sandwich store.

Anonymous Coward (not verified) -- 11.10.2008

Subways are okay and I wouldn't say it's the best but it at least fills your stomach. It's called a fast food chain, it's bound to have flaws and be a little unsanitary. I don't eat there everyday just about once a week and it's very tasty. Anybody else agree?

prarie doggin (3905) -- 11.10.2008

Subway is a franchise and thus has control of what is served, where most of the ingredients are purchased from as well as procedures for running the store including sanitation. The one thing they cant control is human nature. Employees can and will make mistakes, and owners may ignore or skirt some of the procedures to affect the bottom line. Sometimes this will affect the quality of the food, and sometimes the health of the customers. My advice is, if it doesn't look right then walk on by.

By the way, I highly recommend the northern most Subway in the US. It is in Nome Ak, and has two whole window walls that look out on the Bering Sea. A million dollar view, and the food is excellent. Colder than a witches tit in winter though.

MSG (1152) -- 11.11.2008

The Subways we have patronized in the Mid-Atlantic region have all been pretty good to excellent. Haven't eaten there lately, but I do remember having some nice big b.m.'s the day after eating at a Subway; no diarrhea attacks ever.

Mrs. Mad Crapper (1117) -- 11.11.2008

I prefer Quiznos. My darling Mad Crapper, being a trucker, has had many encounters with Subway the last was the most amusing I though. They have like little pizzas there that you can get the choices were cheese, sausage, or pepperoni. So MC asks the little scrawny nerd behind the counter for a sausage one. no we're out of sausage ones. ok how about a peperroni? no we're out of pepperoni. can I put whatever I want on a cheese one? yeah I guess but we don't have any ready made. ok so make me a pepperoni one and a sausage one. ok he says . Anyways he finally gets these pizzas and after he eats them he asks the manager if they get them already made. Oh no she says we put all the toppings on here. That guy has only been working here for a month he's new. HE'S NEW?! WTF in a month you should know this shit! Bullshit I say I think he was messin with your mind MC! I also hate Jared, he just pisses me off for some reason. I was really pissed when they had Family Guy promoting Subway. NOOOOOOO!!!!!

SukWay is just that SukWay...i dont like their processed food stuff..with the processed cheese which is nasty...hate it when u see the big sandwiches on tv bu when u get one..weigh it up....lousy 2 oz of meat on a 6 inch and 4 on a footlong....and 1/2 oz cheese and 1 oz..what a rip off..people who like Sukway arnt very bright in the sub sandwich department

ChiefThunderbutt (2786) -- 11.20.2008

PD is right, Subways are franchises and are all owned by different people. I find it hard to believe that only nasty slobs are able to purchase these franchises. I don't eat there often because I don't think processed cold cuts are good for you, but when I do eat there I have no complaints at all about the cleanliness.

Most fast food corporations will strip you of your franchise if you continually fail your health inspections, it is bad press for their overall business so if you are always failing your inspections you are in trouble.

Meat markets under my supervision have been subjected to many inspections over the last 30 years. The average inspector is dedicated to public health and conducts a very thorough inspection.

If you get sick every time you eat at a Subway you could possibly have an allergy to one of their ingredients. I find it impossible to believe that someone would get sick every time they ate at a Subway no matter where it was located.

My family ate at a local subway this past weekend, and since have been violently ill. I seriously wanted to die! I'm a vegetarian, so it was not the meat that poisoned us. I'm guessing it was the mayo. It is the only thing that all 4 of us had alike. Food poisoning is miserable. I have since called Subway to let them know what has happened. Hopefully they will clean up their act.

ChiefThunderbutt (2786) -- 05.19.2009

A-LO......Was Subway's fare the only thing your family had that weekend? Did you eat any meals
or snacks at home? Some food poisoning can take up to 72 hours to develop symptoms.

I have eaten in restaurants in many states and also in other countries. Food poisoning can, and does, happen anywhere. I must doubt the veracity of comments that claim a certain restaurant chain always makes them sick or is always filthy. These places are franchises and the only things they really have in common is their name and menu options.

I find it difficult to believe that franchises would only be offered to those who neglected cleanliness and always made their customers sick. I don't see how any operation that did this could remain successful.

I worked in the food business for years and the health department inspections, at least here in Nashville, are thorough and demanding.

Actually Chief that is the key element they look for and the ad reads and I quote: "Must have at least 6 years of slovenly experience. Before being hired must display total lack of concern for the food safety of others. People who shower and regularly wash their hands after using the toilet need not apply."

I got REALLY sick after eating at Subway wed pm. This is the 2nd time I got sick from eating at the same place. I did not get Mayo, just a BMT with everything. This is the last time I will eat there. I got sick eating at Wendy's and stopped eating there but it was very mild compared to yesterday. I could not get out of bed (except for using the bathroom) and ran a fever and felt like I would die.

sittingpretty (2332) -- 05.29.2009

The last few times I got subway I got the stomachache. I am turned off to subway for now. I used to get tuna fish drenched in onions and mayo in the '90s and veggies foot longs in the 21st centuy. It was the salads that got me for some reason. Since I was suffering from partial blockage from a dam of poo and didn't know it until the end, I can't be sure it was the subway.

Try Blimpy's. Perhaps a fewer in number but always seem to be locally owned and operated.

MSG (1152) -- 05.30.2009

My biggest complaint about a Subway-type sandwich is that there's so much bread for so little filling. My best solution for that is to order wheat bread--at least that has a little substance, including fiber, and the bread slices seem thinner, making a better filling-to-bread ratio. Still have not had any diarrhea afterwards--always decent bowel movements.

prarie doggin (3905) -- 05.30.2009

I'd like to go one step further and have you drive right by Subway and stop at your local deli. The good ones seem to be a dying breed and will make a far superior sandwich. And you'll be supporting neighborhoods not corporations.

sittingpretty (2332) -- 05.30.2009

I would get sick with fever too if I ate a fresh out of the oven footlong Bowel Movement Turd from subway
