"There will be another celebration of anniversaries today, and it has nothing to do with the Wright brothers and flight.
"It's all about sewage -- that's right, s-e-w-a-g-e -- and the treatment of the stuff we flush.
"So while dignitaries in Washington and Kitty Hawk celebrate Wilbur and Orville today, the people at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities will be toasting 75 years of Sugar and Irwin.
"They are twins -- modern wastewater treatment plants that were
two of the nation's first sludge disposal facilities. Both were activated in 1927. Sugar Creek Wastewater Treatment Facility likely came online in November; records show the Irwin Creek plant treated its first wastewater Dec. 19."
