Answers on the cruise ship outbreaks

Posted 12.23.2002 by Big Sphincter
aha! Better bathe in the Evian, not just drink it.

"CALL it the Cruise Ship Coverup. The dirty secret behind the outbreak of stomach illness on 21 cruises this year is that the cause is other cruise ships in the narrow Caribbean shipping lanes. The big ships routinely dump raw sewage into the ocean. Ships following behind then draw in the polluted sea water for their desalinization plants, which take out the salt, but not all the bacteria.

"Passengers are soon suffering from diarrhea and vomiting - even if they are careful and drink only bottled water - because they are showering in sewage and brushing their teeth with it. "But no one wants the public to know because it's just too disgusting," one nautical expert told us."

This just goes to show exactly how polluted our oceans can be. Disturbing!

Aha! I wondered how big ships get enough water for all those people to shower!

And, this article doesn't mention that a lot of the swimming pools are filled straight from the ocean. We went on a few cruises when I was a kid, and I was freaked out that the pools were salty.

At night, they were drained to make better speed, then refilled in the morning, but not desalinated. It totally makes sense that if another ship had just been through that lane, the intake would pull a load of crap into the pools.

It just goes to show that what you don't know can kill you.

These ships should have some sort of a water treatment system that will kill all of the bacteria in the whater, before it goes into use.

LOL TSV, maybee this years hurricane season wasn't bad because the ships didn't dump as much sewage into the ocean.

And I was naive enough to think that ships, trains, and aircraft didn't just dump waste into the environment.

I think that the cruise ships get away with it because no one sees it. Passenger planes give us the falling blue ice stories we've heard, and I think someone here posted a story about flushing a train toilet in the station.

Even in space, there's the constellation Urion that's visible during a "waste water dump" (check out the film Apollo 13).

I wonder if the red tide algae blooms we here about are caused in part by ships dumping waste.

I really don't think cruises are all they're cracked up to be. One of the companies I used to work for came up with the idea of a three-day sales conference on a bottom-of-the-line cruise ship.

That is to say, the ship was so small that if a dolphin farted, you could hear it through the hull. And, of course, every wave registered in your middle-ear. I was seasick for days and lost ten pounds.

There's something also very claustrophobic about cruises in that you really are trapped, relying upon their food services and other amenities. Period. If that somehow gets contaminated, you are in trouble. I'd rather spend my vacation money on land, thank you very much.

I've never been seasick, and I don't plan on starting.
