Toilets are plugging up expansion of the Bedford County Jail. A scheduled bid opening was postponed yesterday after confusion arose about arguably the most important fixture in the cells. Authorities are worried about the safety of corrections officers if the wrong toilets are installed.
The bid specifications failed to clarify what kind of toilets should be used, and a handful of contractors assumed they would be the standard porcelain variety, Sheriff and Warden Gordon Diehl said yesterday.
Now, the bids are set to be opened today.
"The question came up about the type of commodes," Diehl said in a telephone interview from the Bedford Township lockup. "The contractors thought they would be porcelain, and we need stainless steel."
"We need to keep it consistent with the main part of our building and with stainless steel,
they can’t break them and get chunks off."
