How to build your waterless toilet

Posted 06.11.2003 by Big Sphincter
In NSW, local government regulations allow you to design and build your own waterless composting toilet for your individual circumstances.

With increasing awareness of the affect that the dreaded septic tank is having on our environment many local councils are now encouraging the ancient technology of the waterless composting toilet.

By keeping our human solid waste separate from our waste water (commonly called greywater) from kitchen, laundry and bathroom, the resulting compost can be used to improve the soils in our gardens and easier-to-treat greywater can then be reused to water our gardens.

The average four person family uses 600 litres of water a day. This can be reduced to 480 litres of water, which is then more easily reused in the garden. There are savings all round, for the environment and the family.

I'm all for this but, dry toilets have to emptied out. I tried the dry toilet method and didn't like it. Especially when the heat index is 115, or having two feet of snow, and trudging out to empty the bucket. The though of having week old poop in my house didn't go over well either. I opted for a better system that does the same thing.

I simply piped my flush toilets up to the compost bin. The toilets act as nothing more than a vehicle. The compost bin is below ground and insulated so it will not freeze. This method spares my from emptying buckets, yet allows me to compost my excreta.

The other water is a separate greywater system.
