Which country uses the most toilet paper? (And which country swallows the most bullshit?)

Posted 02.06.2007 by Dave
Here is the news from the BBC. Put on your media skeptic hat:
According to the Daily Telegraph, {English people} each flush 39 lbs of {toilet paper} down the loo every year, which is two-and-a-half times the European average. In fact research carried out by the European Tissue Symposium appears to suggest that some countries have not been using very much at all.

But all that is changing apparently with the runaway success of a black toilet paper, which is described as a creative and daring concept and a defiance of conventional thinking.

The Daily Telegraph elaborates: "New research published by the European Tissue Symposium sees Europe's toilet paper consumption soaring by 40 per cent over the next decade. Key to the runaway success of the toilet roll has been "creative and daring concepts" such as black loo paper."

These reports both stem from the same UPI wire report, which cites Renova as company behind the "creative and daring" black toilet paper in question. Neither the BBC, the Daily Telegraph, nor the UPI bothered to ask the question that popped into this PoopReporter's head after only a moment's consideration: why in the world would black toilet paper, marketed as a luxury good (and thus priced well above normal toilet paper), cause a drastic continent-wide increase in toilet paper consumption?

Nor did the BBC, the Daily Telegraph, or UPI bother with even the most cursory investigation into the European Tissue Symposium. If they had, they'd know that the same organization making the dubious connection between Renova's black toilet paper and a projected 40% increase in toilet paper consumption just happens to have Renova as one of its corporate members.

Could it be possible that these figures -- presented in all cases with no hint as to how they were determined -- are a bunch of corporate fluff, pulled from the ass of some publicity hack trying to get his client's name in the news? After all, claiming that the UK and the US lead the world in toilet paper consumption with 39 and 34.5 pounds per person per year respectively is sure to generate publicity in both countries -- countries in which Renova, in an incredible coincidence, has just recently begun to market its black toilet paper.

I call horseshit. Shame on the BBC, the Daily Telegraph, and all the other news organizations picking up this story for not doing the same.

Show some poop support, or make a poop retort.

This is the problem with the AP and Reuters and UPI. If they say it, everyone believes it. So they put forward this piece of fluff as news, and then everyone else picks it up. Good for the PoopReport for debunking this so-called "news"

Of course it will make TP use go up. How can you question such claim? Part of the beauty of pure, white, unassdulterated toilet paper is that you can see whether or not you've done a thorough job cleansing the brown eye. And if you're at all like me, you wipe until there's no trace of stain left.

Without the pristine canvas of papel blanc to work with you would wipe more JUST TO BE SURE. Therby increasing usage and proving the above claims correct.

GottaGoGirl (2616) -- 02.06.2007

Stinky, I would only use more to be sure if the black paper was the ONLY paper available at that moment.

I wouldn't BUY the stuff. Peach? Sure. Pink? Maybe. Blue? Possibly to match a motif.

But black? No.

Is the bidet a standard fixture in the British bathroom?

Dave (11627) -- 02.06.2007

Not in British bathrooms. In French and Italian, yes.

Thunderbox (838) -- 02.07.2007

That`s due to us being clean wipers, unlike the dirty swine in France and Italy :-)

Fart Poopie (1257) -- 02.07.2007

They're standard in Spain, too.
If you call the Spanish dirty swine, I'll kick your butt, TB. ;-)

It is obvious which country swallows the most bullshit, by far, it is the U.S. (we also do more than our share of spreading it too).

Who uses the most TP would make an interesting study. Some people use little to none, while other people use enough toilet paper to wipe a hippopotamus's ass ten times over. They have a poo that requires minimal wiping, but they use like six feet of toilet paper, and wipe only once with it. Then they wonder how their toilet got stopped up, and why toilet paper doesn't last in their house.

Our biggest problems today are A: the media generating garbage stories all the time (and us believing them), and B: corporations running our lives. (Now for a quick rant) If the American people knew the conspiracies and cover up's that go on, they would be livid. Here in Massachusetts, a recent study found that tobaco companies increased nicotine levels in cigarettes by 11%, to make it harder to quit. Many large food chains put addatives in foods to make the person eating the food, hungry. Hence, they are still hungry, so they eat more (go to Dr. T's health tips for many more of these types of stories). Black toilet paper takes the cake though. Our sewage treatment plants already choke the air with pollutants from incinerating our waste, as well as pollute our rivers and streams, upsetting our eco system. Our lanfills are jam packed as it is, and black toilet paper will worsen this problem, through increased usage. We the public need to start using less not more. It is mind boggling to think of how much toilet paper enters the lanfills, sewage plants, and other waste disposal systems every year.

TP and bullshit aside, the U.S. is one of the most wasteful countries in the world. Large corporations fuel this waste. We the public, are forced to wade through all of this corporate fluff, and are left to stort fact from fiction as a result.

The ball is in our court, yet we let it slip through our hands.

We should find out which contry uses the least toilet paper, and follow their ways.

I know in India they used to, and may still, just use their hand. Well, one hand. The other hand is used for eating. This would be a great way to cut down on waste, while also getting more people to wash their hands afterwords.

Anonymous Indian (not verified) -- 02.13.2007

Traditionally in India, the left hand is used to wash the arse with water. Now the use of toilet paper is starting to pick up but the vast majority of Indians don't feel clean unless the area is washed with water.
Either you use your hand or use a health faucet to do the job.

The Bidet Shop was founded on the principle that personal hygiene etiquette could be enhanced with a more efficient and environmentally friendly solution to promote the health and well being of Planet Earth and the people that inhabit her.

I recently watched and learned as Oprah Winfrey spoke about the general culture of waste this country has inherently adopted - wasting paper towels, napkins, etc. However, one thing not mentioned in her Earth Day show was the enormous over consumption of toilet paper in the daily lives of Americans! Until now, Americans have long considered toilet paper a necessity, each of us using an average of 57 sheets of paper each day! America comprises of only 5% of the world's population and yet consumes about half of the world's toilet paper products! As you know, the wasted natural resources, as well as energy, air and water pollution involved in toilet paper production is truly an eye-opening problem in our society!

The solution is the BidetSpa by CleanButt. In addition to vastly improving one's personal hygiene, the BidetSpa encourages an environmentally friendly and efficient method to cleanse.

Currently, America is slow to adapt to this method of cleansing when compared to other countries such as Japan, India, Argentina, etc. However, through incredible customer reviews, Veterans Administration-approval, and an invitation to be part of last Sunday's ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition show, we are expecting the BidetSpa to become the next bathroom trend in America.

It would be our pleasure to introduce and show you how our BidetSpa is a Green, Earth Saving product, that can not only help save millions of trees, but improve the lifestyles of millions of Americans. We are conveniently located in the heart of New York City.

Have a wonderful Bi-Day!

The best solution is either to make health faucets compulsory in new constructions or to go the natural Indian way of using left hand. Imagine 1. if you apply excreta on the palm of your hand and wipe it with a tissue 2. if you wash your palm with an antibacterial soap. which option will give more cleanliness? which option will remove the stink of the excreta from palm? the answer is pretty simple. So washing the anus is much more clean, healthy and environment friendly same goes for using the Health faucet. So..Stop tissues use water its nature's recycleable material.

prarie doggin (2119) -- 01.24.2008

I am one of those "wipe till it is clean" persons. My last swipe is so clean that I can take the paper with me and use it for a hanky later. With the black paper, I would never know when I am done, and would wind up in a never ending wipe cycle twilight zone.

poopcrayon (69) -- 01.24.2008

how very goth.

i was told never to use colored toilet paper when i was younger...dyes and stuff are bad right?

i wonder if it comes quilted...
