Is Madison Avenue becoming less shit-so-phrenic?

Posted 02.28.2006 by The Big Wiper
In an effort to cater to lactose-intolerant bodybuilders, the manufacturer of Iso-Pure lactose-free protein supplements has decided to visually depict the consequences of the condition in its advertising. I checked out the ploy -- the work of advertisers McCaffery, Ratner, Gottlieb & Lane, NY -- in Muscle And Fitness. The black-and-white shot peeks under the stall at a pair of beefy legs with shorts puddled around the ankles and a roll of toilet paper nearby.

Would this approach have been seriously considered five or ten years ago? Probably not. But the willingness to feature a shot on the pot may have les the do with a Shameless breakthrough than with the frankness with which medical conditions are being discussed these days. Remedies for both constipation and diarrhea are commonly depicted on television, although I've yet to see advertisers going for 'pot shots' on the subject. Lactose intolerance regularly produces episodes of diarrhea in its sufferers, often placing them in compromising positions exactly like this scene depicts

It's a good bet people who suffer from lactose intolerance will not find such advertising offensive, even if the general public might, because of their desire to stabilize their bowels during daily life. Perhaps the manufacturers of Iso-Pure are way ahead of the curve on this one, refusing to let such fussy notions as "too much information" or "what's private is private" and "do we really need to see and hear about this" get in their way.

Have any of you seen examples of frank depictions of the bathroom in any other recent advertising?

Show some poop support, or make a poop retort.

Slight progress is perhaps being made, but true liberalization will only occur when the shitting of men and women are portrayed with equal open-ness, and that is still a long way off in the advertising medium. The true test of liberalized cultural attitudes is not whether you can show a man taking a shit in an advert, but whether you can depict a woman (and i'm talking attractive model here, not some consitpated grandmother) taking one, because that is where the real shitting taboo resides.

Good story, Wiper. I am reminded of the "Oops I Crapped My Pants" ad from SNL. I think I have seen some other poopy ads from Europe, but I am hard put to remember them at the moment. They show up as viral videos on the net.

Fast food HeLL needs to follow this closely. They have light, lo fat, Fadkins, Etc.
Try the "Stool aware menu?"
Nah...the stigma grunts on...
We have to get past the "you are too fat"
before the "I dont want the runs" happens.
The joker was right...

BTW....I drink whole milk...

I still think most corporations are leery of humanizing the pooping experience for fear of splashback from their pootential customers. Watch feminine hygiene product commercials and they all pussyfoot around the subject.

Movies are another matter. I think the most honest bathroom example I saw was in Leaving Las Vegas when Elizabeth Shue was on the toilet, it was shown in a very real light. What surprised me was I read a critical review of it and the toilet thing was considered shocking by the reviewer, when the most shocking moment in my opinion was when she said "you can come in my mouth but not in my hair", a truthful statement for a prostitute most likely to say but certainly more graphic than her sitting on a toilet.

Bunga, I agree. Progress will be made the day we have a pad commercial where the girl in white has a huge red stain on her ass.

Or a Charmin commercial where one of those bears gets skidmarks. That would be funny!

Until then, we'll continue to use "bathroom tissue" and buy "feminine protection products". I don't want to buy these! I want Shit-Be-Gone and period blotters!

TSV... that's hillarious! I can picture someone going to the counter at the pharmacy where everything is regulated now, and more will be regulated in the future asking for a 12-pack of "Shit-B-Gone" in double rolls and a 24 pack of "Period Blotters" in _extra soft_ of cource.

I do see many more taboo or sexual type commercials out ou Europe and Asia. They seem to be a bit more open to nudity and things as such over there versus here in the stuck-up US.

TSV: it's not just 'bathroom tissue,' it's 'bath tissue'--even worse! That makes it sound like you use it to bathe with. What prissy nonsense!
