diapers that smell like ammonia

Posted 01.04.2008 by Snapper (170)
The other kind of Poo Bear's Momma asks:

My three-year-old's dirty diapers have recently begun smelling like ammonia. This has not always been the case, yet his diet is still the same. His wet diapers don't smell this way. Any ideas on what is causing this? Thanks.

Dear Poo Bear's Momma,

I am by no means a pediatric nurse, and I have never claimed to be. I work as a medical/surgical nurse in the adult population. So I can only tell you this: when it comes to adults, ammonia levels can be associated with metabolic issues. So ammonia-smelling poops can have something to do with food not being properly metabolized.

Bacteria help break down the body's byproducts for elimination. Sometimes they can build up and get a little out of hand in the digestive tract, which can be harmful. This might explain the ammonia smell.

I tried to research ammonia-smelling stool, but haven't been able to come up with much of an answer besides the one I gave you. I definitely suggest you and Poo Bear take a trip your doctor for safe measure.

Good luck!

Maybe your three-year-old is turning into a cat. Are his ears fuzzy?

Seriously...if your mommy spidersense is saying it's a bad thing, yet thy kid to a doctor!

Are the diapers smelling of ammonia both wet and soiled? How would a diaper just be soiled and not wet? A poop is almost always a twofer; sometimes or in some people, the bladder empties before, during or after the big event. Sometimes the force of expelling the poop is so strong or the poop is so large that the bladder is forced to empty during the pooping. Are the diapers washable/reusable or disposable? If these diapers are worn overnight, the bacteria in the poop would have time to work on the urine and convert the chemicals into ammonia before the diapers were changed in the morning. There is nothing like having to deal with a poopy diaper first thing in the morning. How can they do that without waking up? How long are the diapers in the pail before being washed and has that time increased? If these are reusable diapers, they might not be thoroughly cleaned in the washing process so bacteria might remain in the fabric ready to start making ammonia as soon as the fabric gets wet, not after hours of being wet. Has the hot water temperature been lowered? Did someone run out of bleach or decide to stop using it? Has the diaper treatment in the diaper pail been changed or discontinued? Has there been a switch in laundry detergents? Are the diapers being washed in a different washing machine? Some of the newer designer diapers with very thick soakers are much more difficult to clean because you have to wash them vigorously enough to force the water and detergent through all of the layers of fabric. Has your child started on new vitamins or other drug or supplement? The residue of some vitamins or minerals is terrible smelling when it leaves the body. Sometimes you try to wipe and flush as soon as you smell the disaster, but you discover you have managed to take out not only the bathroom but the hall and even one or two nearby rooms as you make the circuit with the air freshener.

This reminds me of another question about poopy diapers that smell like mothballs. I've only smelled the ammonia from very full peepee diapers.

I used these things called diaper liners. They looked like fabric dryer sheets, and they went into the cloth diaper. Thing One would poop, I'd take his diaper off, pick up that liner, drop it into the toilet, and the cloth diaper was uber easy to rinse off.

Diapers shouldn't normally smell after laundering, rubber pants do. My kids rubber pants smelled like dirty diapers all the time.

Angela, try laundering them in a vinegar solution for about 10 minutes. Vinegar works the best in my rodent cages and did wonders for the kiddies' plastic pants.

Daphne. Thanks for the tip. I would have never thought of using vinegar.

It's the bomb, isn't it? I found that it works as a fabric softener, too. Since I have a frontload washing machine, it's real susceptible to too much deteargent and bleach (believe it or not, bleach eats through stainless steel as the years wear on). Vinegar has become one of the things that works not only on the clothes, but it keeps mold from developing on the washer's rubber, and it keeps the washing machine clean itself.
