the case of the unending diarrhea (habba syndrome?)

Telekon asks:

I have experienced long-term constipation and hemorrhoid issues since high school. I was a frequent drinker and an infrequent smoker, and I admit to a sedentary lifestyle, although I always got more exercise than the average American. Probably ate too much dairy and drank too much coffee and green tea.

Early this summer, I began experiencing dampness in my underwear that I attributed to sweat. Somewhat concurrently I also experienced my first external hemorrhoid. This June, I woke up one morning absolutely soaked with this moisture -- no smell, no fecal matter, no blood or anything -- and then proceeded to have explosive diarrhea for days. My anus, frankly, was absolutely torn up. I was on the toilet for the better part of the day for a week. I tested positive on a virus test and my GP sent me to a gastro specialist.

With the gastro doctor I did a barium test (for Crohn's), numerous feces tests for bacteria or viruses and what not, and a flexscope/biopsy for colitis or bowel cancer... nothing. I did week- and two-week long regiments of different antibiotics.

Since then, for over three months now, I have experienced incredibly frequent bowel movements -- often ten a day even when taking Imodium. My activity schedule is kinda off from having worked second shift jobs, but it's usually diarrhea all morning/afternoon until it calms down a bit later on. Sometimes the mystery wetness comes by itself and will soak through my underwear, but it also always accompanies a bowel movement. Sometimes it seems to be sweat, sometimes it's obviously not -- I can tell due to the spread pattern. I have tried anti-fungal sprays hoping that the sweat was from a skin infection. No luck.

I have no medical insurance, and my GI doctor has discharged me, blaming the wetness on hemorrhoids and, frankly, not even listening to me. I think he was just getting rid of a chronically sick patient without insurance.

Since then I went to another GP, and he thinks I am lactose intolerant. He ran a pretty thorough blood test for thyroid problems and what not, but everything has come back clean. A week into this no-dairy diet I feel just as bad -- not to mention that there's no history of lactose intolerance in my family. We're about as northern European as you can get.

So, still: nonstop watery diarrhea and mucus and the weird moisture problem. Sometimes I defecate nothing but mucus, often bloody. If my anus was leaking mucus, wouldn't it even occasionally leak fecal matter, blood, or the yellow mucus I see in the toilet? Also, very rarely do I experience any internal discomfort -- if I'm in pain, it's usually from the frequent bowel movements doing a number on me. I have lost about forty pounds since this started. During particularly bad periods I completely lose my appetite.

Any ideas? I am literally running out of willpower to keep going here. :(

Dear Telekon,

I recently heard a news report featuring a doctor who was discussing a new "syndrome" that he has pinpointed in chronic sufferers of diarrhea. The man responsible for this discovery is Dr. Saad F. Habba of Summit, NJ.

People with previously unexplained diarrhea were found by Dr. Habba to have abnormal gallbladder function. Apparently the people afflicted with what is now called Habba Syndrome have gallbladders that pump out way more bile than is necessary for normal digestion.

Because this syndrome is so newly discovered, most doctors are unaware of it and can overlook running tests on gallbladder function if not prompted to do so by other common gallbladder symptoms.

It appears that the patients were "cured" of their afflictions simply by taking a drug usually prescribed for lowering cholesterol levels. The medicine is called Cholestyramine. I think you should mention this to your doctor.

Thanks for asking Motherload!

Wow- after reading this over several times it all seems very similar to what I'm going thru too! I'll be sure to ask about this new Habba Syndrome when I go to the doc. Maybe it is just lactose intolerance or extreme stress, but it's doing a number on my ass! Thanks for the info Motherload - and I'm glad you're back!

I'd like to know if TSV has any comments about this one. Or anyone else who's been diagnosed with gallbladder problems.

I'm not a medical professional but I have a few suggestions that may help you. All the antibiotics you have taken have probably messed up your intestinal flora. Acidophilis tablits will help repopulate your gut with the good guys. Olive Leaf Extract, available at health food stores, is an excellent anti-viral, anti-fungal. If you get the Olive Leaf extract at Wally-World I would double the amount taken. I have taken Olive Leaf for years to prevent colds and flu and have been surprised at how well it workes. I have heard that it can upset your stomach the first few days if you have a heavy fungus infestation. It can cause a rapid fungus die off releasing toxins, but this didnt happen to me. A natural way to lower your cholesterol is to take lecithin. Two tablespoons of granular lecithin a day lowers chloresterol for most people. I hope these suggestions will help you.

I'll take an ignorant stab at it. Since medical tests reveal nothing serious, I'd say that the coffee has initiated a "chronic" GI problem, which culminated in inflammation, and finally blood.

Hemorrhoids can be attributed to either stress or exteme "exertion" of some type.

But I have a theory that coffee is a chronic instigator of GI problems, stomach problems, bathroom problems.

As wonderful as the stimulant is, (im addicted myself) it inflames your stomach and intenstines on the way out.

Stop drinking coffee, including decaf and tea.

That doctor should be ashamed of himself for pushing a patient away who needs help. How totally un-Hypocratic.

I am totally with you on this one Daphne. One time I ruptured an appendix and was taken by ambulance to an inner city hospital. Although I was insured, my wallet (and id) were still in my truck. The level of care I received was not worthy of an animal, and I almost died as a result. It usually cant be proven, but emergency care you receive will often be based on your ability to pay, and often doctors hands are tied.

HaulinAss (11) -- 12.27.2007

I dont know about medical care in the rest of the country but things like this happen way too oftin in my neck of the woods. The only difference is that it happens weather you have insurance or not. I took my neighbor into the ER with her blood sugar over 800 and the doctor didnt even want to see her. He tried to tell us that blood sugar as high as 1600 is no big deal. When I told him that diabetes runs in my family and know better, he got pissed. I know of several people, with insurance and without, who have gone to the ER with pneumonia. Every one of them was told that their chest x-ray was clear and there was nothing wrong. Our healthcare system is broke and I dont think anyone has any idea how to fix it.

daphne (3514) -- 12.27.2007

Hell, once I had an army doctor tell me that a sugar count of 190 after a 24 hour fast was normal, too. It's amazing what they'll tell you if the ER is full, isnt' it?

We need more Motherloads and less Doctor Satans.

!!!!SUGGESTION!!!!

i just started taking "lactose intolerance therapy" pills (one a day) so far my IBS has settled down and poopin has become "more enjoyable." This could be something you should try. After a week of taking them i noticed a HUGE improvement of my BM.

I found them at walgreens they are 10 bucks a box for a month supply. Im sure you can find them at other drug stores too. But I highly suggest anybody with lactose intolerance or IBM's should give this stuff a try.

HaulinAss (11) -- 12.28.2007

I have to admit that healtcare is a very sore spot for me. After Mr. Haulin went into heart failure with no warning and for no apparent reason we were introduced to the nighmare that healthcare has become. I still have nightmares about being trapped in the hospital with greedy, uncaring doctors. It took three tries to find a cardiologist who would treat him as an person unlike the other doctors who treated him like a dying piece of meat. Thanks to God and this doctor he is not only alive but recovering. If there is any justice in this world those first doctors will develop conditions as serious as my husbands and have to depend on doctors just like themselves!

prarie doggin (1904) -- 12.28.2007

HaulinAss, I'll go one step further. If a loved one is in the hospital, have someone in the family there 24/7, even if it means sleeping there. Note everyone who enters the room, and question any procedures performed, medications given etc. Mistakes are sometimes made, and overworked staff may not always be there when needed. Dont be afraid to ask questions, and if something feels urgent to you, then it is urgent, because the person in that bed may not be in condition to make decisions. There are a lot of good caring people in our hospitals, but oversight is often lacking, and that is where we need to step in. I speak from experience. Good luck to Mr.Haulin.

HaulinAss (11) -- 12.29.2007

Thank you prarie doggin, you are right on. I stayed with Mr. Haulin, sleeping in the room with him. The hospital had folding beds for family members. The nursing staff was excellent and saved Mr. Haulin when the idiot staff cardiologist put him on blood pressure lowering heart meds when his blood pressure was already too low. The nurses were great but it was a fight with the doctors all the way. They wouldnt believe anything we told them and wouldnt explain anything. This is the same doctor that told a friend of mine that she had had a heart attack and would die without a stent when she went into the ER with an anxeity attack. She refused the stent. That was a couple of years ago and no other doctor has found any evidence that she has ever had a heart attack. If I had known he was on the staff of this hospital we never would have gone there! The idiot doctor kept trying to give Mr. Haulin the same meds that had almost killed him for the entire hospital stay and we kept refusing them. The cardiologist that had been reccommended to us was also on staff at this hospital but hospital rules wouldnt allow him to take over from the other doctor. The ER doctor who had admitted Mr Haulin agreed to release him so we could see the doctor we wanted to. Dr. Idiot threw a fit and he and I had a loud nasty fight in Mr. Haulins room. Real professional, wasnt he? He finally saw that he couldnt bully us and called the ER doctor to tell him what meds he wanted Mr. Haulin on. At one point he told the doctor "I dont want him on that drug, its only $15 a prescription, I want him on XXX, its $100 a prescription." I'm sorry that this has run a bit long but I still need to blow off a bit of steam about it.

prarie doggin (1904) -- 12.29.2007

I had actually refused to leave my daughters room after visiting hours. The supervisor said that men were not allowed to stay (i guess because of safety concerns). I still refused to leave, and the staff called the police. Fortunately, the members of the NYPD who responded, listened to my story, and arranged for me to sleep in a waiting room nearby, otherwise they would have had to take me away in cuffs. Post #100 yeah

prarie doggin (1904) -- 12.29.2007

Sorry, I seem to be getting the topic(s) off track. Maybe this will help. Poop, fart, diarrhea, hemorrhoid, ass, shit, vomit, stool softner, toilet, pinworms. Feel free to take it from here anyone.

Yes, I have a close relation suffering from Parkinson's Disease which tends to close down efficient signalling. He suffers from constipation and then some diarrhoa (sp?) and finally this colourless, scentless mucous. No doctor has suggested anything which might cope with this nor any real explanation for it. Having a chronic disease makes it fairly easy to dismiss it and the discomfort by saying 'Oh, its Parkinson's..'. What a useful site. we will try some of these suggestions (PD makes for sedentary life-style, previous professional life architect with bum on chair). Thanks J Walker

HaulinAss (11) -- 12.31.2007

When I was looking for natural alterntives to the heart meds Mr. Haulin isnt able to take I found a very interesting website on natural healing and suppliments. DoctorYourself.com is run by a doctor who understands nutrition and suppliments. I remember he has suppliment suggestions for Parkinsons. We decided not to become vegetarians but his suppliment suggetions worked anyway for Mr. Haulin.

prarie doggin (1904) -- 12.31.2007

HaulinAss, I have a brother who is a doctor, and he believes in, and is very well versed in alternative approaches in healing. I had tried many approaches to lower my cholesterol, and was about to see a doctor to prescribe meds. Dr. Bro set me up on a suppliment of about 5 items, and within 3 months I went down almost 60 points. Keep researching the alternatives and good luck.
