WorriedMexicanBean asks:

It's been about three months now (off and on) where I see a brown "tint-dye" arising from my poop. Although its color is never ever black, it varies from somewhat darkish brown to light brown, and it's always in a "dye-ink" form.

I am somewhat worried and I can’t seem to find anything on the internet regarding this matter. What can you tell me?

Dear WorriedMexicanBean,

Try pooping into a pan with no water in it and see if the "ink" still appears. If so, then I will be inclined to investigate further, but at this point I will venture to say that it is simply the process of dilution occurring that is separating bile and/or oils from poo solids. If left unflushed for several hours I would think that considerable breakdown would have occurred, the inky film being the beginnings of the process.

Then again, have you been eating any octopus or live squid lately?

Thanks for asking Motherload!

This cracks me up! When I was a kid I called this phenomenon "vapor trails". My mother used to get so upset when I'd come out of the bathroom and ask what foods make pink vapor trails (it was always the pickled beets that did it). Oh, to be young again.

What we have here is one of the first ever reported emails from the species Archetuethis poopiedoopus, the human poop squid.

Nah, just probably undigested fatty stuffs. If you start getting the runs after heavy meals, maybe you should get some bloodwork done.

This happens to my poop maybe once or twice a month, and, as Shitwit says, it does sometimes follow eating certain foods such as beets. Anything with food coloring, like icing, can also possibly do it. But if I come across an unflushed toilet (at work, the mall, etc.) where the poop has been there a while, one of the indicators of its duration of inundation is how much pigment has leaked into the water. After all, the poop presumably agitated the water a bit when it made splashdown, and that slight turbulence will continue to wash past, disengaging the tiny color molecules. Poop is not watertight.

I really have no idea what all the fuss is about. I like it when I can poop out a Home Depot paint sample chart.

Dear MotherLoad,
I found out what was causing that "color"/dye. I drink Cranberry juice
daily and more especially on weekends so that was attrubting to my "colored
dye/ink"....I was worried for nothing!

Thanks again!

Chocolate Ovaltine leaves a nice blue dye-ink color around poop if left in the toilet for a few minutes.
