pill or liquid laxatives?

Posted 07.11.2004 by Poonurse (1313)
Shyman asks:

Which work better -- pill laxatives or liquid laxatives?

Dear Shyman,

If I had my druthers to pick just one product to clean you out like nobody's business, hands down it would be Mag Citrate. Sold in a little green bottle, it is vaguely reminiscent of 7-Up gone wrong. You can get it over the counter.

I'm just not a fan of pills. I'm not REALLY a fan of any laxative. Metamucil taken 3-4 times a day works much better at preventing the problem in the first place, but no one ever listens to me.

Good luck!

Please be advised that I am only a Poonurse. I am NOT a medical doctor. Any advice I give should be taken moderate skepticism. Please consult a REAL medical doctor if you feel you have a serious medical condition.

Poonurse is an RN with 25 years experience in labor and delivery. Her qualifications include seeing a lot of poop, and owning a computer. Also, she works in Michigan, which she calls the asshole of the universe, so that's another bit of credibility. Got a question for her?

"go lightly" works even better then mag citrate, but i think you need a prescription for it. i agree with poonurse on the metamucil, though - as an added bonus, metmaucil makes "fiber wafers" that are basically cookies but have the same effect as any other form of metamucil. they taste yummy. i eat them for breakfast every morning, then i take a nice easy crap about 40 minutes later. it's a great way to start the day.

I agree completely, pooping in the morning is a luxury that some are gifted with. It's a good relief in the beginning of the day, but if you don't wipe well, you're pretty much screwed.

The Shit Volcano (3818) -- 10.01.2004

That's easy. An Ex-Lax bar works better than either pills or liquid.

how did I google this? (not verified) -- 09.07.2005

For research purposes only, say a disgruntled fast food worker wanted to uh, tamper with the drinks of drive thru customers as a method of revenge...what would be the best laxative product to use?
(I swear I'm using this information as a writer and not as a disgruntled fast food worker.)

The Shit Volcano (3818) -- 10.25.2005

Take one of those liquid capsules and empty it in the drink machine. No flavor. No mess... Well, maybe in the fast food customers pants.

I think that someone put a hard core laxative in a drink, and then had me drink it. I only took about one big mouthful, but man did I get sick. About 3hrs. after I drank it, I started feelng a bit of nausea, and 5hrs later I had the worst diarrhea ever, followed by vomiting. This lasted a total of 16hrs, and I still don't feel right. What type of laxative could do that?

curiousgirl (not verified) -- 05.04.2006

Does putting Visine in someones drink give them horrible diarrhea and vomiting? How long does it take for Visine to kick in after ingesting?

Only on the Internets (not verified) -- 05.04.2006

Curiousgirl, it doesn't. That's an urban legend:

http://www.snopes.com/medical/myths/visine.asp

However, it has other much more horrible effects like putting the person in to a coma, causing seizures, halting their breathng entirely, and possibly killing them depending on the amount used. It is not something to mess around with.

Needless to say, don't try it unless you desire running the risk of killing someone, and that's quite a legal mess with the whole killing a person thing.

If I put a lit match in someones drink and they drink it, will it come out theior ass still on fire? Would they call it a burning shit??

The stupidity of some people makes me wonder why some people are allowed to breed. And they say snails are dumb animals..... HA

GottaGoGirl (2615) -- 05.05.2006

Dear Victim-- That sounds like food poisoning. It could have been caused by almost anything you ate within 24 hours (or more) before the vomiting and diarrhea began. Laxatives do not cause vomiting. You ate bad fish...or something.

Mag Citrate (not verified) -- 10.13.2006

Magnesium citrate solution just isn't working for me. I have to use the bathroom only like once per hour and its not really cleaning my system. I drank the whole bottle (10fluid ounces) and then drank a glass of water.. can anyone please help?

I need to flush my system this weekend and go for a checkup on Monday. The Magnesium Citrate was recc by the doctor...BUT ITS JUST NOT WORKING! *sigh*

tarebear (not verified) -- 10.21.2006

i recently put visine in one of my friends water... the next day i told her about it and she never mentioned anything about getting sick and i saw her pour out the water in the afternoon and then i saw her about an hour and a half later and she was fine. the day after she had told a bunch of people that she had gotten really sick the night before... is that possible? or is she lying? if she really did ingest the water how long would it take to kick in?

The Shit Volcano (3818) -- 10.22.2006

Tarebear, the Visine thing is a myth and has been proven false. Be careful of this, though. If she is on any sort of medication there is a chance, however remote it may be, that the Visine may react with it and cause something along the lines of an allergic reaction. In the extremely rare case that this happens, you could be held responsible and even jailed for such things.

To try and make a "friend" sick is not funny, despite what reality TV has told you. If I was the friend in question, I would not remain one after such an act. That is disgusting!

I am seriously starting to think I have a blockage... I haven't eaten since Sat. and what I ate then I threw up, nothing is coming up or going down. I was recently on medication for a kidney infection... could this have anything to do with it? What can i do? I'm in serious pain and feeling sick all the time. I have a doc's appt Thurs...but I'm not sure I can make it that long. I'm going with mag citrate... but if that doesn't work... Lord I just can't stand the thought that I may have another blockage... I've had 3 in the past that required surgery. Can anyone reassure me it's just a lil medicinally caused backup and all will be well?
Just sign me scared and hopeful, but mostly scared

Actually from personal experience one of the best substances I found to cause diarrhea is "Xylitol". It's a sugar derived from corn, absolutely natural. In fact you buy it at your local health store as a healthy alternative to sugar. 3 to 6 tablespoons of this and it is truly Montezuma’s revenge (I used it in lemonade, haven't tried it in baked goods). It takes about 40 minutes to start working all this time your stomach grumbles and gurgles audibly... and after, you cannot control your bowels for most of the day, I'm talking anywhere from 6 to 8 hours of nothing but painfully explosive watery diarrhea. The best part about this product is after you go to the bathroom a few times you get really thirsty (from dehydration I'm sure), so you end up drinking big glasses of water and the nightmare continues over and over.

How about a cheap, natural and age-old remedy that's almost as bad tasting as cod liver oil, but works faster than your coffee-maker? Yep, CASTER OIL!

kdub (not verified) -- 03.16.2008

victim that wasn't a laxative that whoever got you to drink it was most likely eye-drops...
A lot of my friends use them as pranks you only need to use a drop or two but a lot of people think the more you use the longer it'll be, but TOO MUCH CAN KILL SOMEONE. the eye-drops become toxic and that's when the body creates the way of "getting rid of them" you probably got the effect of more than two drops which caused you to get so sick.
I would go to the doctor pretty soon if you don't feel better soon.

i want to lose the baby fat and my friend said poopin will help me lose weight is that true if so what can i take to make me poop

El Scumbag (598) -- 02.01.2009

Whatever weight you lose by pooping will be regained as soon as you eat. If you want to lose your baby fat you need only two things:

1. A healthy balanced diet low on carbs, fats and sugar, high on fruit and vegetables. This will also help you poop more.

2. Exercise.

That's it.

ChiefThunderbutt (3061) -- 02.01.2009

Anonymus mom....I lost my baby fat by eating a diet consisting of corn, chocolate cake, fried Mars bars, gallons and gallons of beer and an occasional chip buty. Now my body is covered with adult fat.

Any laxatives whether pills or liquid are not good for you. Unfortunately when they are used for extended periods of time, they destroy the ability for your body to dump without them. When you stop taking them, your body can no longer poo on its own.

Johnny B

sittingpretty (2394) -- 10.02.2009

Some people will never dump on their own. For those people laxatives are a good thing. Being chronically constipated is worse for your body over the long run. So if you need a laxative to poop every day then take it.

My roomate doesnt work and is destroying everything while I'm at work. I come home and most of my food is gone.... what could I hide in a tasty treat that would make him poop his brains out?

ChiefThunderbutt (3061) -- 01.17.2010

Essplode......Putting laxatives in someones food can be dangerous plus it is rather childish. Why don't you talk to your room-mate or kick him out instead?
