post-poop itching -- and not just on my butt

Posted 08.10.2007 by Motherload (1057)
Jay asks:

Sometimes immediately after I poop, my skin becomes really itchy. It is not my anus skin, but the skin on my upper back, chest, and triceps mostly. It goes away after a minute or so, but it is really itchy. Why does this happen? Can I prevent it somehow?

Dear Jay,

What you describe is most likely itching resulting from perspiration. The itching comes from the combination of sweat drying on your skin and the fact that heat and moisture can trigger histamine release that causes a reaction similar to that of an allergic rash without the bumps.

Unless you have a high bacterial content in your sweat, it shouldn't cause any problems other than the itching that you experience for the short time afterward.

In an attempt to prevent the sweating during pooping, you can try staying cool by pooping naked, pooping with a fan or air conditioner blowing directly on you, and by staying calm and relaxed during the pooping process.

Thanks for asking Motherload!

Nice advise, mom, but may suggest just holding it until January, taking a road trip to the arrowhead region of Minnesota, where you can drop one right on the shore of Lake Gitcheegoomie...or Superior, to us non-natives....

Running to the toilet?

Jay, this is a new one for me. I've never thought about itching on your back after taking a dumper. My question is do you flex when you poop? I know that sometimes after stretching in the morning, I itch because it's increased blow flow hitting muscles that were recently dormant. Maybe this also contributes to your itching.

Maybe it's a case of Pavlov's Anus...you just associate (pun intended) pooping with itching. Or maybe you need to shower more often.

No no, honey. Kitties don't sit on the potty.

I'm guessing the Queen has it pegged: Pavlov's anus.
