Leah asks,

I have had poop in my blood from mid-December last year to the beginning of March. When pooping it was VERY painful... so much so that I literally cringed even at the thought of pooping. Anyways, I finally went to the doctor to see what was up. She did her probe and declared me perfectly healthy, but gave me some medication to see if it would reduce the pain and the blood. It did. But since I've discontinued the use, I've started to poo blood again and it hurts a LOT. Has this happened to anyone? Does anyone have any idea what's wrong?

Poonurse responds:

Do you have poop in your blood, or blood in your poop? Very different problems.

If you have the former, I would say you are in deep doo-doo, no pun intended. It is very hard to get poop out of your blood.

If the problem is the latter, I would advise you to start back on the medication your doctor gave you for this problem. See if you can't find out what the ACTUAL NAME of your condition is, from your REAL DOCTOR. This would go a long way towards helping me give you some advice.

Let me know what it is when you find out, and I'll see if I can offer any help.

Leah writes back,

The medication my doctor gave me is called Proctomyxin HC. I was to apply it morning and night and after every poop for ten days. I did all of this as instructed. My doctor thought it was a cut that I had "in there." The medication started to work, but not after one huge poop of blood. It was on my poop, I think, although I didn't excatly pick up my poop and open it up. After this terrifying incident, it went away -- both the pain and the blood. It stoped for the duration of my ten days, and I was a happy pooper. Since then, I've discontinued the medication (as instructed), but the blood has now returned, along with the pain. But, if this makes sense, the pain has moved to a different area in my rectum. But it hurts just as much!

Dear Leah,

As you know, I am not a doctor. But it sounds like you possibly could have a rectal fissure, which is like a tiny tear in the lining of the rectum. It can cause pain and rectal bleeding such as you describe.

But I must tell you that beyond following a high fiber diet and drinking tons of water (these make the poop easier to pass and less likely to keep irritating your rectum), you REALLY NEED to go back to the butt doctor and report that your symptoms have returned.

If you have a family doctor treating you, ask for a referral to a gastroenterologist. They specialize in these kinds of problems. But do go back.

Thanks for asking Poonurse!

Please be advised that I am only a Poonurse. I am NOT a medical doctor. Any advice I give should be taken moderate skepticism. Please consult a REAL medical doctor if you feel you have a serious medical condition.

-- Poonurse

Poonurse is an RN with 25 years experience in labor and delivery. Her qualifications include seeing a lot of poop, and owning a computer. Also, she works in Michigan, which she calls the asshole of the universe, so that's another bit of credibility.

Got a question for her?

For the first time a couple month's ago, after finishing what i thought was a normal poop, i stand to flush the toilet and see all this blood. It lasted about 4-5 days then went away. This repeated twice more until yesterday it happened again. It doesn't hurt, but scares the poop outta me ;). The blood is bright red and mostly appears while wiping. Have been eating lots of junk and sitting alot.

I'd just like to know if bleeding when using the restroom was something that was serious because I don't have insurance and can't afford another hospital bill but I am concerned about my problem help anyone.

Hi.
It sounds like alot of people are having the same problems as I am.
I've been pooing with blood on it,every now & then for about,well,4-5 months now.
It doesn't generally hurt too much but on time it was extremly painful & lasted about half a hour. I am pending what to do as I think it is rather embaressing to talk about it, But at the cost of my health,I would much much rather see a docter,So I've decided that is what I'm going to do. Sofar I have picked up on that lots of water & lots of fibre are also good, So I shall start eating lots of Oats & things. :]
Also I'm very young,14 to be exact & I think that everyone with this problem, even if you think it's minor, should get it checked out,Because you don't want to regret being able to fix it now before it exclalates into something much more extreme.

I guess I'm going to the doctors soon then.. Ive got the red slime poops too- it would be good on here to know everyones outcomes (haha) yeah but seriously, it would be nice to know what is now with everyone, and what every ones symptoms were. I feel sick sometimes before and after I poop, I was at the doctors months back for bad stomach pains when I ate and she took tests etc and couldnt find anything, she said there were traces of blood in my urine but that cleared up after a course of antibiotics. and the pains became less frequent. She said that If I started to have blood in my stools to come right back- and they'd refer me to a specialist, so.. she expected me to poop blood? hm. I eat plenty of fiber and only usually drink water- plenty of it, and I cycle about an hour everyday.

Im 27 and have been seen blood for over a year now, to the point I finally realised it was not going away and started to freak out thinking CANCER!
After visiting this site, at times it made me feel better, other times worse so went to the DOC!
He told me cancer is out of the question and when I told him my symptoms of constepation and the blood is diagnosis was correct, I had an anal fissure tear which I bet most of you have also.
Means you have been pushing to hard and have an anal tissue tear basically.
Drink water, eat well, to not be constepated and it will fix itself, also try get a thing called Rectogesic, will help the bleeding right away.

Thanks

Anonamous coward 4/4/08, tell your mom so she will take you to your pediatrician. Anytime one has blood in/on the poop or on the tissue one has to see a doctor. 99.9% of the time the blood is from a fissure or hemerhoids(sp?). Butt rectal bleeding is often the first sign of cancer. If caught early is not often life threatening. Don't be afraid to see the doc. As you can see from this site, docs see lots of people for bloody buttholes.
I didn't see the doc when I first saw blood in my teens. By the time I was 33, that fissure was almost to the muscle and I had to have a sphincterotomy where the doc sowed up the fissure in surgery. The pain had gotten so bad I had to fill the tub with a little warm water and pooh in the tub. The water kept the pooh from burning the fissure when it came out. My poo was soft or watery and I would fly off the seat as it felt like fire on the anus. I cried and trembled from the pain so in the tub I went. The tub got scrubbed after each time, of course.

well, first of all, don't be embarrassed. you're right, doctors are there to help. and they've seen plenty of gross things, much worse than your poop problem.

you also shouldn't worry about having a needle stuck up your butt. they'd probably just ask you some questions and do some tests. you might have to give a stool sample or something. but it's really not something you should be afraid of.

i also wouldn't worry too much about it being cancer.

it's possible you have medical issue that needs to be taken care of, but there's also an excellent chance that you just need to make some changes to your diet.

but the most important thing for you to know is that nobody here or anywhere else can tell you what the problem is besides a doctor, so you're just gonna have to suck it up!

first of all i wanted to say anyone who gets light headed, dizzy, etc when they first see/notice bleeding is only having a panic attack (i get them) stay calm, try not to freak yourself out or think you automatically dying..

alot of ppl have hemorrhoids and dont know. This isnt to say there isnt a small chance it may be something else, its smartest to always get anything like this checked out with a Dr. and asap.

the last thing i want to say is that it always looks like more blood than it is when in water.. think of adding a few drops of food coloring to a glass of water, or wipe up a drop or 2 of ketchup. so dont think u lost alot, your body has alot left :)

Best wishes, Be healthy!!! Good luck!! God bless u all!

I looked on the internet and it said that it might be cancer, im like WTF I CAN'T HAVE CANCEL. now i looked at most of these comments and discovered it was probably because of my hemmroids because of my prolonged sitting. But today, the third day, i finally poo'd and there was no blood :D

I needed a bowel movement and saw that it had pinkish spots in it, along with blood. Upon rectified examination I believe those pinkish spots to be internal skin/tissue. I'm worried about this. A.C. 4/15/2008,
The first thing I would do was think about what you might have eaten recently. I have had similar pink "skin/tissue" bits in my poop from time to time. Usually they are the result of eating strawberries, grapefruit, or tomato skins. Depending on how much blood, it was probably a coincidence related to a hemmy or a small fissure.

Hello, Im 33 male and thought I have been seeing blood in my poop but was not sure, today when I took a dump (my second of the day) I saw blood on the toilet paper and in the toilet. I'm not sure what to do, I have not been having any pain and pooping has been easy. Not sure yet If I will be seeing the doctor as it may be a minor thing, I will monitor the situation for a few days.

I'm into my mid-60's, so I've pooped a lot of times in my life, and had blood in or on my stool a fair number of times (all it would take is twice a year and I'd be well over 100 times). I've found that, if I do nothing, the blood goes away in a couple of days most of the time. However--if I have blood visible on the turds, and it recurs for 3 days or more, it's time to see the doctor. He (or she) has seen lots of butts, and mine is no different from anyone else's--except that the blood might mean something is wrong with mine right now. Normally the doc just talks to me; once in a blue moon (!) he might actually have to look at it, or even examine it digitally, in which case he uses rubber gloves and some smooth gel that is totally painless. The examination is a whole lot less trouble than either continuing to worry about the pain or dealing with something serious that could develop from inaction about the problem.

Hi,

I thought I had a hemrohid (sp?) about a year and a half ago because I was very itchy and had a weird skin tag looking thing (blood on tp when I whiped too). I went to the dr. and it turns out that it was an anal fissure and it was an anal papilla that formed trying to "protect" the cut. Since then, it is difficult to keep clean (I do, but whiping hurts) and I think I'm making it worse. I know surgery (as per my dr's instructions) will remove the papilla and should help all of this, but I can't afford it at the moment. If anyone knows of anything I can put on these cuts to help the itching, please let me know. I currently use either bacetracin or A & D ointment, but it helps with the pain, not the itching.....

Anon ABCDE: Dad's a doctor, and you haven't told him? Tell him! I doubt he'll charge you for a house call. He already knows you have a bottom and you poop, so what's embarrassing? For everybody else, without a doctor in the house, go and see one. Believe me, they see enough butts every day that yours won't be anything unusual. They don't go around talking about your problem to others; it's private and confidential. If you are concerned enough to write to this site, you need to see a doctor.

Becka, more often than not, its just hemorrhoids, or an anal fissure ( a small tear near the hole, from dry, hard poop). Your question was answered multiple times in this and several other "blood in poop" threads here. However, it is a good idea to get it checked out, as bloody stool can indicate something much more severe.

Hi. I just travelled overseas (NA to London) for a month-long engagement. I travel internationally a lot and have certainly experienced a variety of intestinal problems in the past. However, this is the first time I am experience this: LOTs of blood coming out with every bowel movement (since arriving). Nothing else, no pain, no irritation, maybe a slight dizziness afterwards, but, otherwise, fine - no blood any other time, nothing with the blood, stool seem fairly regular (although, admittedly have not inspected too closely). I am on oral contraceptive (have been for 10+ yrs), did take a lunesta on the overnight plane, take 6 vitamins each day, and an occasional pseudovent (prescription decongestant) and/or excedrin for bad sinus headaches. Any ideas what could be causing all this blood (it's a lot)?

AC 8/9, have your doctor check you for pilonidal sinus; or you may have a lesser cyst. Either way, get it looked at.

AC 8/17, I'd guess you're back from your month abroad. If you're passing a lot of blood, regardless of how well you're feeling otherwise, see your doctor! It's possible, of course, that someone on this forum takes some of the same meds you do and has had similar symptoms; but I wouldn't bet on it. If you are feeling dizzy during or right after your b.m., that's not perfect, either. See the doc.

Hey I'm a 15 year old girl and all my life have never liked pooping so I use to hold it in till it hurt so bad I would have to get it out, but back then I would never have blood or any pain. Now a days I'm usually pooping at least every other day but just recently I started to wipe and find blood on my toilet paper and then I would look down and see some blood in the toilet, and when I go I some times feel little pricks of pain like there's something in my poop. Silly AC's, you both probably have hemmoroids or possibly a anal tear. Either way, please see a doctor, as both are treatable. Just remember "if the blood in your stool is a bright color red, no need to fear, you won't soon be dead." If the blood is dark, brown and tarry, well what can I say? I'm so very sorry.

I'm worried since I haven't read about my combo: I have pale stools with darker red blood a lot of the time. Then they get very dark, black. Then back to pale and blood. Also, since this started 5 months ago, the odor has been just awful. I farted on my wood chair last week and I still smelled it next day! I have'nt been to doctors in years and I'm hoping just to get back to normal. My bowel movments have been normal last day and 1/2, I'm just hoping my next one looks normal

Powerful: dark red blood is partly digested; black stools may have a lot of blood in them. I am not a physician, but I have read enough to know that these signs can possibly point to internal bleeding, such as a bleeding ulcer. I would not trust such a problem simply to go away. It may hold off for a few days now and then, but it's still lurking. I suggest a doctor visit soon.

Powerful, just get help now.feces

But I think for one, you may have a fat digestion disorder i.e. a high conc of bouyant fat in them. I have symptoms like yours, save the blood. The symptons get worst with eating a lot of dairy. My feces are pale gray with unimaginable odor -- I still smell them an hour later, even longer if I leave for a while and come back into the house. Also, they float so much that I can hardly get them to flush down. I never dare go at work
Sometimes I have to get then down via a bucket of water. And they stick to the toilet bowel to the extent that I have to do some scrub actions on the porcelin every crap.

Umm hi i'm 12 and i pretty much have symptoms of you all. But I have it a little different: When I poo, it hurts a little. When I wipe, There is a speck of blood about the size of your index fingers nail, but it isn't there when I wipe for a second time, I have slight stomach pains and Feel a little quesy for about 3 minutes then it goes away but I take a tums to be sure and that happens every other day I saw blood twice it was kinda light red but kinda bright there was nothing in the poo itself should I be worried? I think its like most of you said, a anal fissure because the poo hurts when its still *ahem* coming out... and I'm 12 My mom freaks out real bad if i just say 'ow my stomach hurts' so I don't want to freak her out with telling her this and I obviously can't go to the doctor because i'd have to tell her and my doctors a man! If its just like a cut in my *ahem* butt then how do i heal it? What can i do? Please help. I'm a girl, age 12 (and I know It's not 'that time of the month' because it is only on the toilet paper and it only happens when I poo. Thanx for any advice!!!!

Nikki, you need to tell your mom what's going on. You might have a hemorrhoid, or you might have a tiny anal fissure. Listen, your mom can help you get some relief, and she should understand.

Please don't be afraid to talk to her.

I had blood in my poop. I was so worried about the poop that I went to the doctor. He looked at my anus and said it probably is hemmoroids, but keep looking at the poop to see how often it happens and come back in two weeks. If the poop has a lot more there would be tests.

I'm 26. I've had rectal bleeding on and off for ages. My bowel movements are going haywire... One minute I'm crapping solid, the next sloppy. I'll have to bolt to the sh*tta because it just hits me. The last few times I've taken a dump, the toilet bowl is just red, there are blood splatters on the sides. Bright red blood. Basically looks like i've got my period out of my bung hole. I'm really worried, but don't want a doctor shoving anything up my ass. I'm also female.

I noticed something strange only since my crap didn't flush down. I looked at it before the flush and it looked regular but I didn't see that it didn't flush down becuase it was big. An hour later I come back and see that the water near the log looks pinkish and the log of crap itself was washed out, very light beige, almost whitish. This freeked me out. I'm worried that all my craps are like this and wonder if its normal and should I test them by not flushin for an hour to see if they look like this. Anybody, has this happend to your's?

Ten days ago I had surgery on my leg (I know its "just a leg" but it was major surgery) post-op I was in hospital for 5 days, during the 5 days I was given blood thinning needles to prevent blood clotting. Once discharged from hospital, I've been confined to 2 weeks strict bed-rest at home, I'm only allowed to get up and go to the loo then straight back to bed.
Yesterday I went for a poop and when I wiped, the the toilet paper had heaps of blood on it, looking in the bowl, the water was red. Of course I freaked out but then I sat back and thought, "well I have been inactive for nearly 2 weeks now, I've been lying flat on my back with next to no movement, perhaps this explains it? Maybe a hemmoroid?"
I there anychance the blood thinning needles which I haven't had for 8 days now, could be responsible? My mum thinks this is unlikely as after 8 days it would have happened before now.
I'm not too stressed as the bood is bright and I'm not in any pain, if it sticks around I will see my GP. Just want opinions on the blood thinning meds, could this cause it, or is it more than likely my inactivity?

Thanks =)

Some believe that a minimal blood present without further symptoms sort of is not enough to warrent too much concern. They reckon that it's probably only dangerous if other digestive symptoms surface, or else if the blood is kind of maroon or darker.

My situation is sort of on the fence. I have blood and very bad odor (sulfur/metallic smell) every so often with no other symptoms. But the blood is deep red, so it worries me. I dont want to go to the doctors but I kind of think I should.

ok, i have had tis problem for about a month now, it started to worry me so i stopped and thought about things i may be eating that may cause this.i love to eat spicy things and hotsauce is my favorite topping. i have loved spicy things since i was young and its caused me to develop acid reflux. i have had severe heartburn lately which has caused me to believe that may be the problem. i tok some acid reducer the past few days and it seems to be doing the trick. i have seen no blood today at all. this may not solve everyones problem however if it even helps one other person it will be worth posting. i will continue to take the acid reducer and monitor what happens as a result. if it stops completely for the next week i will then stop taking it and see what happens. i will post another comment after i test my theory. i am not a doctor so my opinion should not be taken as fact. if you decide to try what i am doing i would love to see your posts to see if it helps anyone else.also, i talked to a friend about this and it has happened to him. he has stomach ulcers which he went to the doctor for and got medicine that made the bleeding stop.

Hey Cob Web (Colby dude), I think by the lack of response, your situation may be unique and werth to doctor. It sounds like blood could be soaked into your logs. Go to the doctors, man. Men out there: don't be so macho that you don't get checked out. Too many men don't. My whole block seems like many widows. Their husbands died years ago. Two of them are in are 90 years old or better and their husbads died in the 1970's
