Erf asks:

Is it normal to see bits of tomato skin in your poop on days that you've eaten some tomato? Also, reddishness in the water seeping out from the poop due to beet?

Dear Erf,

1. Yes

2. Yes, if you have recently eaten beets.

(The ex-Mr. Poonurse used to have panic attacks about this very issue. He always felt that the tomato skin was a by product of some sort of undiagnosed bowel cancer. He used to drag me in the bathroom to look at it. One time, I wasn't home, so he used a teaspoon and chunked some off and SAVED it for me to examine when I got back. Gross.)

Hope this helps.

Please be advised that I am only a Poonurse. I am NOT a medical doctor. Any advice I give should be taken moderate skepticism. Please consult a REAL medical doctor if you feel you have a serious medical condition.

-- Poonurse

Poonurse is an RN with 25 years experience in labor and delivery. Her qualifications include seeing a lot of poop, and owning a computer. Also, she works in Michigan, which she calls the asshole of the universe, so that's another bit of credibility.

Got a question for her?

Did u get your answer? This same exact thing has happened to me so I am curious as well.

I had tiny red sticks in mine.

I'm so confused by people having "whole" things in their poo... don't you people chew at all? that might explain why your body doesn't digest it well. try using those chompers a bit and your bowels may thank you :oP

I have *pieces* of vegetables all the time.

also, I'm only guessing on this, I'd assume blood from your butt looks the same or darker than blood from a cut on your skin. the tomatoes I eat are lighter in color but sometimes it's still alarming at first. I am a hypochondriac so :/

the last two times (within the last month) I have had diarrhea, I've noticed what looks to be a whole cherry tomato in my stool. This is puzzling because I haven't eaten any since September (Now November). This has happened twice... this can't be normal. Please tell me if you know anything about this!

Dear Rose ... You seem to have already solved your problem on your own. You state that you only see red in your poop after you eat tomatoes. That should tell you something. You can waste money on a gastroenterologist if you want but keeping track of the times you see red in the poop after eating tomatoes is much cheaper.

Totally eliminate tomatoes from you diet for several weeks but watch the poop closely. Then eat tomatoes and check the poop for a day or two. If the red only occurs after eating tomatoes I believe you have your answer.

Concerned Rose's picture

last night when I got home from work I had dinner which involved cherry tomatoes with ranch dressing. About a month ago (the last time I ate cherry tomatoes) I saw red in my poop. Everytime it happens, becuase it has happened a few times, I tell my mom who is a RN. She usually tells me not to worry, that it is just something I ate. So I stopped eating cherry tomatoes, and I had tomatoes last night, and today on my sandwich, and i just finished in the bathroom and saw two spots of red in the poop, none in the water bowl or the paper. I have never seen red in the water bowl or the paper. I am very confused as to what is blood and how you know it is blood. I am wondering if it is undigested tomatoes or not. My body does not digest dyes or colors very well, prime example is I got a snowcone a few weeks ago with cherry grape and blue on it, and shared a lime green one with my friend, the next day my poop was teal. I am starting to get frustrated because I have been having digestive issues lately, and for the past few months I have been eating very well, and making sure enough fiber is also in my diet. I do get gas/cramps/bloating sometimes, I do not usually take anything for it because I used to take medicine for it a lot, now I seem to be resistant. Sometimes it's harder for me to go sometimes it's loose. I am always well hydrated. I am going to visit a gastrologist after I start my food diary. I am just really concerned as to what it might be and what might be wrong with me, and how if i know it is blood. Please, please help.

Same with grapes, apples, cherries, etc. New meaning to the term peeling out and leaving skid marks !

Aadil: The flesh of the tomato is soft and quite easily digested unless you are having some definite digestive trouble. If you are seeing tomato flesh in your poop, you are not digesting as you should; see your doctor. The skins quite often come through undigested; no problem.

Aadil's picture

Now I knew that the skin of the tomato is seldom digested, but what of the flesh of the tomato?

I've found the thing that seems to survive intact after a trip through the poo chute is sweet corn. those suckers look exactly the same coming out as they did going in. makes me wonder about all the diet books saying they are fattening. how come? i also had a very painful experience once years ago (but i remember it like yesterday) when i accidentally swallowed a whole shelled walnut. that sucker got stuck sideways up there and acted like a sort of trap door lid. nothing got past for days until i managed to poke a paddle pop stick (a sort of ice cream thing on a stick for those who don't know what i mean) up there and manouver it sideways upon which it got forced all the way out by the backlog for the past 3 days. that walnut looked just the same as it did going in as well. it seems that some things were just not designed to be eaten.

I have seen entire cherry tomatoes in the toilet after eating them whole the night before. It's kind of weird, but at least I know what they are.

There are a couple of polls on this site about which foods reappear in your poop, and tomato skins is one of the choices, chosen by a lot of people. I have certainly seen them in my poop; it's normal, not a problem, since the tomato skins are not fully digested and past on through. Don't worry about it.

Having vegetable by products is probably a sign of a good diet. Think about it, ever see anything recognizable after eating at a fast food place ?

Stu's picture

I've often wondered this, too. I have tiny bits of what looks like tomato skin in my stool as well. I eat lots of tomatoes, especially in salsa. I figure that's what it is. No smearing like blood.

Now I wonder about the itty bitty black specks that sometimes show up.

Anonymous Coward's picture

I pooped a ton of red thingers that I swear I thought were my insides coming out, but I had also had sun dried tomatoes the night before. Would the sun dried tomatoes have retained water to make them look like my insides falling out?

Anonymous Coward's picture

i ate some pasta w/ sun dried tomatoes in it...later that night when i did #2 my stool looked as if it had some redness in it...looked similar to undigested tomato skins...is this normal? thanks

TSV-- Only if the olives go IN whole! Are they just rolling down when you toss back the martini, or what? Wouldn't they be tastier if you CHEWED them?

Red bell pepper will sometimes, uh, reappear. I have an acquaintance who lets her kid eat "Salad Toppin's" as if it were an actual food, and it has several ingredients that look pretty much the same coming out as going in. Maybe your boy ate something like that recently.

Or maybe crayons.

Has your son been complaining of "oowwies" or whimpers during his BM? Is his temperature elevated? Has he eaten something fiberous and red within the last 72 hours? What about outward signs--is his anus looking healthy and not distressed? Common sense will give you the answers. Signed--another Mom

If it looks like pimentos, but smears could it be blood, or is it probably tomato? I'm asking because my two year old son has this.

If you think seeing tomato skins in your poop is bad, try eating 2 big bowls of lentils with corn. :)

Anonymous Coward's picture

Yeah, unfortunately I do the very same thing to my husband, and I also frequently take out pieces of it to see if the red thing I saw is indeed a tomato skin or something else. I really do try to stop, but its hard since I'm hypochondric. At least I'm not alone.
