can you recover from colonic inertia?

Posted 03.24.2008 by Motherload (941)
Stacy asks:

I'm wondering if anyone has ever recovered from colonic inertia (this is where your shitter stops working at all). I know this is a funny site, but I've suffered for six years since my son was born, and docs say surgery is looking like my cure. WTF!! I'm really miserable, though...

Dear Stacy,

According to the gastroenterology forum that I read in its entirety, there are several drug options that have been tried to treat chronic colonic inertia. This list includes Reglan, Cisapride, Misoprostal, polyethylene glycol electrolyte solutions and Zelnorm. Unfortunately it seems that none of these options have proven to be very effective. Most patients on these medications it seems, has ended up having surgery--subtotal or total colectomy-- in order to finally find relief.

However, the laxative Miralax seems to be having very promising results with many patients. Miralax has recently been released as an over-the-counter medication. I suggest that you give it a try before resorting to having your colon removed.

Thanks for asking Motherload!

Of all the organs I could have removed (and still live), the colon has to certainly be at the bottom. Good luck with the non-surgical treatments and keep in touch Stacy.

If I had my colon removed, I'd have no place to put my head.

But seriously, Stacy, I wish you well. It must be scary to have this problem. I was just kidding around.

Those two posts could have been on one, Ms. I'm gonna hit 3000 soon.

Daphne. What was your observation of a couple days ago, that none of PDs plethora of posts was self-serving or trite? Clearly, he's now operating under a different set of rules, rules designed to overtake you by December.

LJ, Daphne will always be in front of me. That way I can keep my eye on Herbie.

Daphne, you made me laugh aand I certainly need to laugh because Stacie and I have something in common. I was told I need the total radical colectomy in 2/07 and 1/08. Not a partial because it doesn't work. No bag, a direct small intestine connection to the anus. I don't know what the stats are in regaining bowel continence post-op, butt I do know that as long as I drink at least 2-4 glasses of Miralax EVERYDAY I am emptying at least enough of my andaconda sigmoid colon to be comfortable. I able to work in the afternoon some almost every day. I am continent TOTALLY with exception to stinky yellow post colonoscopy prep slime.
Stacy, if you are not sure, get a second opinion and ask the second opinion doc about trying these medications if you haven't already. Are you being followed by a Gatroenterologist every 3 months.
As long as my doctor can keep my colon functioning, I'm keeping it. My chances are high that I might not live through another surgery anyway. My mother needs to not lose another daughter. That's just me. I'm not saying to do what I do. I'm just saying make sure that it is your very last option because there is no turning back.

Logjam (2301) -- 03.24.2008

Sittingpretty. Jesus you've been through a lot. And I must tell you that I love the words you string together, like "stinky yellow post colonoscopy prep slime." I'm looking forward to reading your front page story and hope it has plenty of filled-to-the-gills-and-dripping-with-ooze sentences.

prarie doggin (1384) -- 03.24.2008

And rest assured sittingpretty, he will be counting them.

sittingpretty (124) -- 03.24.2008

You're beginning to sound like that patient. Are you he?

Hieronymous Bowels (120) -- 03.25.2008

Stacy, I checked out several articles on Pubmed and it appears that the results for the colonic resection are generally quite good. The colonic resection is essentially, for want of a better comparative, similar to a gastric bypass. It's a relatively common procedure that doesn't often result in commplications.

I don't even want to think of life without being able to shit. Then again, with the way people have been acting the last two days on the road, it seems there are a lot of people with this problem.
