Dan Wood, Toilet Artist: A PoopReport Exclusive Interview

Posted 09.30.2001 by Dave (11987)

Across all societies and cultures and borders, people poop. You poop, I poop, George W. Bush poops, the Pope poops. In fact, Abraham Lincoln pooped, George Washington pooped, Christopher Columbus pooped, Julius Ceaser pooped, Jesus pooped.

Keep this in mind. We'll get back to it.

Dan Wood is a toilet artist. To be more accurate and respectful, Dan Wood is an artist who has found a unique subject matter through which to explore the simultaneous past and present of humanity: the toilet.

On a bright day in New York City, fellow PoopReporter Tim and I sat down with Dan to view and discuss his work.

The underlying philosophy behind Dan's work is that the toilet is a timeless aspect of the public sphere. More than a personal appliance, the toilet is a solution to a problem faced by every human that has ever lived.

Since the dawn of man, man has pooped. And since civilization began, man has tried to dispose of poop. From chamber pots to toilets, finding ways to remove waste has shaped society as much as finding ways to supply food and water has. As civilization advanced, so did methods for distribution of sustenance and removal of waste -- allowing cities to safely grow bigger and bigger without starvation or disease.

The toilet represents thousands of years of human evolution, the past and the present at the same time. As a kid, Dan was fascinated by the urinals at Fenway Park -- giant troughs, constantly flushing, purely utilitarian and functional. As Dan grew older, he learned about the toilets of the Roman Coliseum: built over a diverted river, it was essentially a giant constantly-flushing trough. 2,000 years of history and advancement, and yet the past remains the present.

This is the crux of Dan's art. "Here's this thing you use every day -- but it's been used every day for 2,000 years." When you look at the toilet, you're looking at humanity's past, present, and likely its future.

To Dan, the toilet is a time machine, a window into humanity. The issues you think about sitting on the toilet are the same issues your ancestors thought about when they were sitting on theirs, and the same issues the Romans faced when they pooped 2,000 years ago.

The toilet is a reminder that while our culture and our technology has advanced, humans have not. We are still driven by the same needs, wants and desires that we have been for ten thousand years. As complex as society becomes, it is still nevertheless ultimately driven by the distribution of sustenance and the removal of waste.

Wonderful reporting! Normally one must read the Atlantic Monthly to find such artful, intriguing, and enlightening insights. But Poopreport.com has done it again. I am a man, but I'm not afraid to admit that my eyes became moist upon reading Dave's article.

On a side note, what the hell's up with the midget ketchup bottle? Is that a NYC thing? And how about the potato chips covered in white stuff??? What and where were you eating?

Dave (11987) -- 09.30.2001

Thanks for asking, Eagle-Eye Chip --- during the interview we enjoyed potato chips covered in melted blue cheese. You see, in NYC, at a nice hoity-toity cafe, you wouldn't be caught dead eating potato chips... that's so blase. However, potato chips covered in blue cheese --- all of a sudden, that's gourmet, and thus acceptable to high-falutin' members of society such as yours truly.

Hillbilly (42) -- 09.30.2001

I don't know about that blue cheese and potato chip stuff. I think I'll stick to my Moonpies and RC cola.

Anne Tait (not verified) -- 09.30.2001

Getting back to the article, what a fine one! A very interesting artist. I should know, he's my best friend.

Yvonne Parker (not verified) -- 10.01.2001

Althought Anne Tait, as she so candidly points out, is Dan Wood's best friend, I should also add that she is a soul of veracity and unbiased to an extreme. Trust this woman. Buy this art. Or, at least enjoy it.

Jeff B (159) -- 10.01.2001

I have cancelled my subscriptions to the New Yorker and Ayn Rand. I needn't travel any further than "The Poop Report" to satisfy my intellectual curiosities.
This piece is clearly Pulitzer material.

Indeed, this artist is fabulous! His work is of unparalelled wit and incisiveness. Dan digs into the etrails of human culture and brings out a common denominator that unites and humbles us all no matter how rich, poor, western, non-western learned or non-learned we might be. Poop is that great equaliser. No matter what kinds of engines we may have devised to dispense with it, things haven't changed. Dan's work is clairvoyant testimony to the essence of our grim worldly condition
of toilet gilders.

Tim (40) -- 10.01.2001

As a witness to both the chips and Dan's great work let me say that Dave and I could have torn through another plate of those things while listening to Dan. If it was not for the ride home that he had to chatch we could have talked all night. Thanks again to Poop Report and Dan for a fine night out. It sure beat seeing Rush Hour 2.

Kathryn Hagy (not verified) -- 10.02.2001

I am mightily impressed by the words and work of Dan Wood. And now if you'll excuse me, I have to go to the bathroom...

Mighty Mighty Mighty! a fine report indeed. My favorite is the circolo!

Chip Brown (200) -- 10.02.2001

Hmmmmm? Call me skeptic but I'm a little suspicous of all this fan mail from those apparently outside of the poop community. Not to take anything away from Dan and his inspiring art but could his friends and coworkers be jamming the system with praise (well earned as it is)?

Dave (11987) -- 10.03.2001

I'd prefer to think that PoopReport has had a heretofore silent community of art critics. Not that I mind either way...

Imagine my delight when I discovered that some one with whom I share a name, also shares my love of all things latrine.

Skiddy Poo (76) -- 04.29.2002

Glad this article was re-posted. Being a newbie PR person, I must say that this pieces is literary art. Art meets art over pints of beer, minature ketchup bottles, and "hoitie-toitie" bleu cheese chips. Excellent.
