High tech pooper scoopers fail the test

Posted 01.05.2006 by daphne
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter Linda Wilson Fuoco recently explored some of the latest inventions created to pick up Fido's feces. The Shark Grab n Bag Powered Scooper is a motorized, battery-operated, hands-free retrieval system selling for around $29.99. Its manufacturer, Canadian-based EURO-PRO Operating, may be on the right track to attract consumers tired of dealing with hands-on poop scooping; but it seems they need much, much more work on their product.

The Shark Grab n Bag, available at Bed, Bath, and Beyond and other retailers, performed poorly when the reporter tried it in her backyard and a local off-leash dog park. The process in which the machine wrapped a dog's pile in biodegradable plastic left both the outside of the bag and the machine smeared with the offending matter -- which means the machine is not as hands-free as suggested.

Ms. Fuoco also tested Poop Freeze, a spray product that boasts the ability to -- you guessed it -- freeze the poop so that it might easily be picked up, supposedly leaving less mess behind.

Developed by Topaz Technology and selling for $9.95, this spray leaves a hard film on the poop; however, it appears that one only benefits from each can about three times. That's roughly $3.32 to freeze each pile Fido makes. Furthermore, one must be careful about where one sprays -- the substance will possibly freeze the poop to the surface on which it has fallen.

Ms. Fuoco concluded (and I agree with her) that the easiest way to pick up dog poop is still the tried-and-true plastic bag method. The pet industry has to do a little better than freezing and automating to earn my money just yet.

Show some poop support, or make a poop retort.

If they would come up with a stronger laminate spray, we not only could pick up dog poop easily without mess, but could also start a cool desk paperweight business.

I think it would be a good idea to develope a longer lasting freeze spray and attach it to the Shark thingy. Freeze and scoop together.

The turd freezer might come in handy once in a while.
Sometime people can see the slightest shitstain on their lawn, which can't be prevented if the turd is less than rock solid. The turd freezer might help prevent this.

The spray idea was shitty from the get go, dry ice is only about $1.00-$1.50 per pound so you could cryogenically preserve fido's fece's for a fraction.

Just make sure the dog shits out of the way and leave it there. No sense it more shit in plastic bags not biodegrading in landfills....

Happy trails,

Crap, I forgot to mention the bags are biodegradeable on the shit machine. I always seem to forget something.

She needs to evaluate the NEW Lighted S3 Pooper Scooper ! Finally someone has developed a "better mouse trap/pooper scooper". It is lightweight, hands free design, with built-in light, scoops, storage, and handle. Works on ALL surface types ! Available on Ebay too.
Perfect for around the home and while on walks!

The pooper scooper has proven to be an excellent help for me. It does require a little practice to use it. However, I am now able to use it without causing it to be soiled at all. The reviewer evidently expected to be an expert the first time. This is smiliar to somebody who has never played basketball compalining that it is impossible for anyone to make a shot from the foul line because they failed on their first attempt.

I agree with Dr Mike and Eric. With one dog in particular, that hasn't quite got the grasp of house-training, this product has served me well. At first, I wasn't good at operating this little contraption either but with *some* practice, I got better. Now the only problem I'm having is trying to find the replacement bags for it. I used to be able to find them at PetSmart and places like Bed,Bath & Beyond - no anymore folks, not even at their websites.
Sooo, maybe I'm back to the hand grasp bag and pick up the doo but does anyone cringe when they grab the bag just a wee bit tight and feel the squish?
