My mom always told me seven years. As a little kid, I pictured a feculent ball of gum in some hidden corner of my colon, churning and coagulating, getting bigger and badder as I swallowed more and more gum.

That vision never really stopped me from swallowing. And it turns out, my mom was lying anyway [1]. (probably not intentionally, i hope...)
