Why does my dog always want to sit next to me in the bathroom when I shit?

We got a female Sheltie puppy six months ago. This is the first time in my life I have ever had a dog. Every time I go to the bathroom, Dixie follows me in.

If I try to lock her out, she will scratch at the door and bark until I let her in. She will sit there and rest her body against my leg and demand I pet her as I drop my loaf. As soon as I am done shitting and wiping, I stand to flush and she runs to the door, knowing that "we" are done.

Why does this dog want to "help me shit"? Do other dogs do this? Does the dog enjoy the smell of my dung?
