3-Methylindol er en indolforbindelse der dannes ved mikrobiel nedbrydning af aminosyren tryptophan. 3-Methylindol forekommer vidtspredt i naturen, fx i f¾ces, tobak, oste, m¾lk og grisek¿d (ornelugt). Forbindelsen har i meget svag koncentration en blomsteragtig lugt, medens den i h¿jere koncentrationer har en st¾rk f¾kal lugt. Finder anvendelse i parfume og forekommer i gylle. Forbindelsen er opl¿selig i de fleste organiske opl¿sningsmidler og svagt opl¿selig i vand.
