mucus, blood and alcohol

Chris asks:

I've had some weird symptoms lately. I'm 26, Male 145 pounds at 5'9. I eat 2 meals a day and the last month or so I have noticed a yellow mucus when wiping after a poop.

Very recently within the last week I have noticed that my poop is broken down, almost flaky with a light tan color apposed to the dark solid matter. Also after wiping again it was mucus.

As of early this morning my poop came out half reddish-orangey color and half tan. It was broken down still flaky looking and I was getting mucus during wiping. It doesn't hurt and I don't feel pain of any kind. But I was a bit freaked out as I watched it stirring in the toilet. You could slowly see the reddish-orangey substance part from the poop to the bottom of the toilet due to the water. My thoughts are it was blood compacted into my poop.

Why is this happening now? I’ve been eating the same food I have been for years. Some things I do know is if I don’t get a good nights sleep my body functions as far as my intestines go don’t function well and I find a greater need to relief myself.

Also I noted that a lot of consumption of alcohol will result in my visiting the toilet later in the evening to relief myself. It generally comes out liquid. Recently, I’ve started “the shakes” the next day after drinking. I was told that was a withdrawal symptom thou I rarely drink. But when I was out of town for 6 months, 9 months ago I was binge drinking.

And spicy foods… I used to be able to eat them no problem just as I used to be able to drink alcohol no problem but now in the last 2 years this has changed.

And no I haven’t seen a doctor about it. Not something I am yet prepared to ask assistance with.

Dear Chris,

Congratulations on your first step toward recovery. I see your inquiry as really being a cry for help. Based on the information that you have provided, I feel that you are in denial about the fact that you are an alcoholic.

In the same paragraph that you stated that you "rarely drink", you also used the words "lot of consumption of alcohol" and "binge drinking." The shakes that you are referring to are not only a sign of withdrawal, they are a symptom of chronic alcohol abuse. Casual drinkers can get a whopper of a hangover on occasion, but the tremors are usually a sign that things are a lot more serious.

The poop that you have described is your liver's way of screaming at you to get some help! Bile secretions have been blocked and this is causing the lack of brown coloring in your poo. The mucus is a sign of irritation in the lining of your intestines. You may have already developed ulcers that are beginning to bleed and this is showing up in your poop as well.

Get help now before you do even more damage to yourself. Go see a doctor!
