Ken Asks:

Dear Motherload,

I found my way to your site by Googling "goopy poop." There is not a more descriptive term for what I am experiencing on a daily basis. I have done a "shitload" of research, but cannot find anything describing this problem, which has become chronic. No, I have not seen a doctor, except for the usual bromides to help with IBS, but they have not helped at all. I cannot afford more medical care on this. Can you help me better understand my problem?

Eliminating alcohol and/or milk products takes some of the edge off, but the problem persists. Any suggestions as to where I might look for more info on this problem. or how it might be alleviated?

Dave responds:

How is the rest of your diet? Is it healthy? I suggest you have a better diet and, most importantly, start taking Metamucil. That's a fiber supplement that will really help you solidify your poop. Let me know if that works.

Dear Dave,

Thanks for your response. I have previously tried a number of fiber options, most recently the brand sold by K-Mart... nothing seemed to help along that line. If you really think it's worth a try I will give Metamucil a go, but my experience with fiber has not been hopeful. Been there, done that.

I am currently not using any alcohol or caffeine. I am keeping spicy foods to a minimum.

Dave responds:

I think Metamucil is the same as any other fiber supplement. I guess it's time for the expert to respond. Motherload?

Dear Ken,

Generally speaking, poor diet and goopy poop go hand in hand. Taking a fiber supplement won't give you perfect shit if everything else you consume is basically worthless. You say that you are not consuming any alcohol or caffeine and have cut way back on spicy foods. What about water? Do you drink any? Do you eat any vegetables or whole grains?

If the majority of your diet includes fatty, fried foods and high-fructose confections, then you might as well just go ahead and spice it up and get drunk for some enjoyment, because a good, solid shit is not in your foreseeable future.

If achieving a truly non-goopy poop is a real priority for you, then you will choose to eat a well-balanced nutritious diet complete with plenty of water, healthy snacks, natural as well as supplemental fiber, and exercise appropriately. That should do the trick.

Thanks for asking Motherload!
