Teens to Text For Morning After Pill— Good or Bad Idea

Postby katis25now on Nov 03 2009 12:31 pm

** I DID NOT WRITE THIS**

There are more teen pregnancies in the UK than anywhere else in Europe. It might make sense then, that an experiment was conducted at six secondary schools that were considered "pregnancy hotspots" in Oxfordshire. The experiment? Girls from age 11 have been able to text requests for emergency contraception (aka the "morning after pill") if they had unprotected sex or were worried their condoms broke.

Since July, five students (less than one student per school) requested the service. The students don't just get a pill magically at their doorstep afterwards; they get a face-to-face appointment for a full clinical assessment with a nurse. (Incidentally, not one of the five students was deemed eligible after their consultations.)

Not surprisingly, people are divided about this "text-for-pill" trial. Family values groups think it promotes promiscuity among young girls, and those in support of the program want to roll it out to all schools in the county.

Does providing access to emergency contraception (via text and after consultation with health care professionals) to young girls make sense to you?

Kids will be promiscuous if they want to be regardless of the consequences. Give those who have succumbed to temptation a way out, don't ruin a young girls life by forcing her into motherhood against her will. If I understand the morning after pill correctly it is not an abortion, it simply prevents an unwanted pregnancy.

I am in favor of the morning after pill for men, it changes your blood type.
It does not require many words to speak the truth.

At least the girl gets checked out by a medical professional. The parents can be glad about that.

On the whole, Oxfordshire is regarded as an up-market county; there are some rough areas, but most is OK.
I can imagine that in some areas of the UK, it would be more economically viable to provide the morning after pill via post, on an opt-out basis (when the posties are working! :D ).

My favorite line from any of their skits has to be when he's that little girl and his mother is putting him on the bus for school (the other guy in the series). They're going back and forth about how much they love each other. "I love you more than __________." and such. When the little girl gets on the bus, she leans her head out the window and shouts, "I love you more than cum shots, Mum!"

Here's my other favorite part of that show...

It is one of those shows that hits more than it misses. They show the out-takes on compilation shows and they're good too.
"Computer says NOOOO!" has entered common use over here, and strangely often diffuses situations where corporate systems are buggering about.
