Those houses in Joplin were worthless pieces of shit as far as I`ve seen on the news at work. What kind of idiot would build a shoddy timber frame kit house in a hurricane/tornado region. Is this even allowed under US building regulations?

Most people in the world can't choose where that live; they are born in a place and have to survive in that place - unless they have money it is impossible to move.

There is potential for a tornado in a very large portion of the US. Even the new construction could not save those houses, as most retrofits make the houses only wind resistant. They do this by using steel straps to secure the roof to the frame. If the roof is blown off, then the walls have no support and will also come down. If you do want to spend a lot of money, you can get impact resistant walls and windows, or you could opt for an underground shelter. A tornado of the magnitude that hit Joplin would have left a similar path of destruction in almost any town/city. The tornadic activity has jumped in the last few years and seems to have shifted out of the traditional tornado belt, so I don't expect many people in this new area are prepared. The best thing that they can do is have good warning systems in place, and secure shelters in the area to go to if your home is in danger. And don't be thinking of moving to Jersey. We've got enough people here.
