Being able to discuss digestion is so important to me, not because I want to push people's limits or gross anyone out, just because I am trying to destigmatize open discussion of bowel disorders. It ends up completely pushing people's limits sometimes, but if I keep it all inside, I become a part of the problem. To me, it's civilized and mature for a group of adults to be able to talk about the entire process of digestion. It's not like we're rolling around in it!
If we look at the prevalence of trans fats, saturated fats, sodium, preservatives, wheat, dairy, meat, etc, in the average 1st world diet... is it any wonder we are experiencing diseases like Crohn's, Colitis, obesity, cancer, cardio-vascular disease, diabetes, etc. If we can't talk about digestion, we're leaving out a huge part of the public debate!!
Also, if I was taught more about the digestive tract when I was younger, and talking about poo wasn't so stigmatized, I never would have got as sick as I did. Daphne, this was a major part of the problem: I purposely hid my condition from my mother.
Anyway, you guys are all here, so I guess you understand a lot of this already. When I had my 4th anniversary party one of my hopes was that people would walk away from the party and be able to talk to others about what Crohn's was, or an ostomy, or some other bowel issue. And some did!! Knowing you're all already seasoned poo-talkers, I challenge everyone reading this to talk to someone in your life about what an ostomy is!
